2023 Sportsman's Dinner

The annual Sportsman’s Dinner was held in the College gymnasium on Friday 27 October. It was great to welcome over 350 guests to join us in celebrating another successful and enjoyable year of school and community sports.

Our special guests Natalie Medhurst (Australian Netball Player) and Glen Jakovich (West Coast Eagles Player) were wonderful in sharing their journeys as well as some great advice for our aspiring student athletes. Well done to the Year 11 students who interviewed them on stage.

A huge thank you to the members of the Health & Physical Education team for your tireless work in preparing and running the night, and to Emma Van Niekerk, Andy Barnett, David Vallis, our amazing front office team, Martin and the catering team and to the many other Mazenod staff who helped out and supported the event.

We had 15 teams participate across Year 7-11 team events and 2 students who competed in the novice individual races. In very challenging hot conditions on the day the students who participated achieved some outstanding results with many teams finishing in the top 10 of their age category.

Some notable results were:

  • Nate T – 3rd in the Novice Boys
  • Year 11 Team – 3rd in the Age Category (Lachlan S/Elliott W/Brodie I)

Many thanks to the parents who came along on the day and supported the students in their races. A big thanks to Mr Grabski and Mr Mason for assisting the teams.

Oblate Cricket 2023

Practice Match

Wednesday 25 October

Mazenod College v Kent Street Senior High School

On Wednesday 25 October, Mazenod began their Oblate Cup 2023 campaign by travelling down the hill for a practice game against Kent Street Senior High School. Mazenod won the toss and Vice Captain Lachlan S elected to bat.

Mazenod made a reasonable total of 9 wickets down for 166 runs. Top scorer was opening batsmen Tom B with 42 runs, he was well supported by Braden F with 25 runs and Vicario G and Jevan B with 14 runs each.

In the second innings Kent Street came out with an attacking style, and with an obvious plan to put the Mazenod bowlers under pressure by getting early runs. Mazenod managed to take 7 wickets, but the home team managed to get the total of 166 runs in 35 overs.

Micah (The magician) A was the pick of the bowlers, spinning his way to a very handy 3 wickets for 30 runs, at a very important time of the game, when wickets looked hard to come by. Jevan B was also very serviceable with the ball, picking up 1 wicket for 15 runs off his 4 overs.

Regardless of the result, it was a great game to get the boys to play together for the first time and try some boys in different batting positions. The boys will continue to train on Monday afternoons and Wednesday mornings during Term 4, before the much-anticipated Staff vs Student cricket match in Week 8, and then the Oblate Cricket Tour in Week 9.
