Can You Host An International Student?

Kate Lonergan, Languages and International Coordinator

Most years, Aberfoyle Park High School receives 1-2 study tours from Japan. Students stay in a homestay in the local area for between 1 and 2 weeks and have a specialised program organised for them at the school. We would love to have more families who are able to host during these times. In 2024 we are looking to host a group of 18 students from Morioka, Japan on 17 March to 24 March. We are possibly also hosting another group in August.

This is an invaluable experience for both local and international students and families. Japanese students are usually in year 10 but the Aberfoyle student can be any age. Host families do not need to have anyone who speaks Japanese, they are here to learn English after all.

If you have any questions please contact the international leader kate.lonergan736@schools.sa.edu.au

If you are interested in hosting and would like an application pack, please contact Kim Wade the International SSO at kim.wade540@schools.sa.edu.au.

Please Note:

  • Students must have their own bed but could share a room with another child of the same gender.
  • Alternatively, some families have their children share a room for that time to give the international student their own space.
  • Students will need to be driven to and picked up from school unless they are travelling with a host sister or brother who also attends the school. They are not to make their way to school by themselves.
  • Compensation of approximately $300 per student is offered to help with some costs.
  • If you are able, feel free to take students to tourist places such as the city, the beach, Marion, Glenelg, Victor Harbor etc. Please don’t feel obliged however. They are here to experience regular Australian life.
  • Each family member over 18 will need a Working with Children Check – cost to be covered by the school. One adult in the family will also need to complete a Reporting Abuse and Neglect online course.
