Bike Ed is 'Wheelie' Fun

The Year 3s are in full bike mode with the launch of a new Bike Ed program at CHPS.  It has been wonderful to see the students commit each Friday to learning various skills in order to ride safely in our local community.  We are learning & further developing how to balance, harbour up, glide, power push, scan, understand 'STOP', 'GIVE WAY', 'T-intersections', group riding and more!  In the coming weeks we will be continuing our skills but also building our fitness & stamina ready for our event ride in week 11.  If you are a parent of a year 3 student and you would be interested in joining our event ride, please contact Shane.Holloway@education.vic.gov.aufor more details.

Warrnawood Sharks Cricket Club

During this week's PE lessons, the Year 4s participated in a Cricket Clinic run by Craig, Steve and Captain of the Senior Women's team, Zoe, from our local Warranwood Sharks Cricket Club.  Students had a taste of batting, bowling and fielding skills, with many showing a great talent in this sport!

The Year 3 & 4 girls also had a Q & A chat with some of our own Sharks players, Lottie, Holly, Zoe, Isabelle & Sophie on what it's like to play cricket!

If your child has shown an interest in playing cricket outside of school and you would like more information about the Warranwood Sharks Cricket Club please contact Steve Toohey who is the junior coordinatior at warranwoodsharksjuniorcc@gmail.com

Region Girls Cricket Final

Last Friday November 10th, our Girls Cricket team represented Croydon Hills at the Eastern Regional Metropolitan Summer Finals.

The girls played against Camberwell Primary School, Waverly Christian College, Ferntree Gully North Primary and Serpell PS.  They won two games and lost two, one by a margin of only 3 runs, finishing 5th overall in what is a very high level of compretition.

All of the girls played to the best of their ability and put on a show for all spectators watching! It was an awesome day and we couldn’t be prouder of our girls and this incredible achievement!

Murrundindi Incursion

Wow what an incredible incursion the Year 3 - 6s have had this week!

During our Visual Art classes this week students have attended a boomerang throwing incursion presented by Wurundjeri Elder, Murrundindi and his son Pallyan.

Students were taught how to hold and throw a boomerang, in the hope that it would return.  They also learned what boomerangs are made from, the differences between the boomerangs made by Murrundindi and some of the souvenir ones and heard how they were once used to knock ducks down from the sky for cooking.

Each student had at least 2, possibly 3 turns in throwing the boomerang and we had a few that were able to catch them on its return. 🥳  Charlotte from SED is the first girl this year to have caught a boomerang. Way to go Charlotte!

Students were also treated to the master at work to the delight of the crowd.

Following on from the incursion students will be designing and decorating a display only boomerang as a reminder of our incursion next week, during their Art lesson,.

If anyone is interested in purchasing a boomerang or even the amazing merchandise from Murrundindi check out his website and follow the links to purchase. Could be a great Christmas gift. https://murrundindi.com.au/

Thank you Murrundindi and Pallyan for your visit.  Our students and the school have loved hosting you both and hope to see you again soon.

Library News

All library books are due back by Friday 24th November (we understand that it is a Curriculum Day, so those who usually have Library on Friday can return them Monday 27th November), as we have to commence stocktake.  As you can imagine this is a huge job as all books are removed from the shelves and put through the computer individually. Please help by making sure your child’s books are returned on time.

If your child has an overdue book at the end of the year it does not magically disappear from the system – it is carried over to next year and your child will not be able to borrow until this is rectified. If you have previously paid for a lost book and it turns up in good condition during stocktake (sometimes it has been in the classroom and is only found when tubs are cleaned out or teachers return their books.  Other times it is found in the Library in the wrong spot) your money will be credited to your school account and you will be notified. Unless it is a very popular title we do not purchase a replacement until after stocktake for this reason.

Earlier this term, students in Years 1 - 6 participated in workshops facilitated by International Needs Australia (INA).

The money from the workshops this year were directed to Nepal for two main programs:

  • WASH - Water and Sanitation Health Project. This involves toilet construction in schools, implementing girl-friendly toilets for menstrual activity, teaching secondary school students about hygiene and sanitation, and teaching girls how to make reusable sanitary pads.
  • Train mothers how to provide nutritious food to themselves and their babies through advocacy, and encourage them to go for prenatal and postnatal check ups so that early signs of morbidity can be detected.

Attached here and here are more information about the projects on their website.

It is fantastic that we can make a positive impact on the lives of others in the world!

Food For Families

CHPS is proud to again partner with Uniting for this year's Food For Families Christmas Appeal.

Food For Families collects non-perishable food items like canned soup, packets of pasta and baked beans, as well as household essential items including personal hygiene and cleaning products to support those who need it most.

Food For Families is a great way to get together and offer practical support to those who have fallen on trying times, a way to spread Christmas cheer and ease the pressure for struggling families at a very expensive time.

Food, gifts and household essentials are distributed at emergency relief programs, family services and outreach centres across Victoria and Tasmania.  Families can select food from Uniting's food pantry when times get tough and bills stack up.  Food for Families also provides food that’s easy to prepare for people experiencing homelessness or sleeping rough.  With millions of Australians currently living in poverty and many more experiencing cost of living stress, the need is greater than ever.

From Monday there will be collection boxes set up in our main foyer, where you can drop donations.  We thank you for supporting this wonderful cause 😊
