College Houses
Your house is your home
The rationale behind the implementation of House Colours at the College is in order to:
All students are encouraged to gain their House Colours by the end of the school year.
Students will receive one House Point for participating in College House Days and various co-curricular activities. The house points committee meets once per term to allocate House points.
House colour strips are awarded during or at the end of the year. For students to be awarded House Colours, they must earn 8 House points in one year. Multiple House colours can be earned in one year.
Students can check their accumulated House Points on Simon by visiting their profile page.
For further information about which activities are eligible for House points or if you have an idea about another club or activity, please see Mr McCartney.
When Mary MacKillop was eighteen years old, she moved to Penola to take up the role of Governess for her relatives, the Cameron family.
During this time Mary held classes for her young cousins and welcomed many young local children to join her classes. It was in this experience that Mary’s vision to educate the poor began.
Knowledge and wisdom are the value of Cameron House and the motto, “Knowledge will change the world” reflects this.
PRAYER:
God,
You called Mary MacKillop to educate the poor and empower them to change the world.
Allow us to continue her legacy as we seek to inquire, challenge and deepen our understanding of the world around us.
We ask this in your name. Amen
Kincumber is the location, about an hour north of Sydney, where the Sisters of St. Joseph opened an orphanage for street children in 1887.
Here the orphans were taught trades so that they could become self-sufficient and would no longer have to live on the streets.
Dignity is the value of Kincumber House and the motto, “With dignity we stand tall” reflects this.
PRAYER
God,
You called the Sisters of St. Joseph to respond to the needs of the vulnerable children in NSW. We ask that through your example, we too can seek opportunities to support the most vulnerable in our society, promoting their dignity and allowing them to experience your love.
We ask this in your name. Amen
Sr Irene McCormack was an Australian Josephite Sister who worked in the village of Huasihuasi in The Andes, Peru. The people there were very poor and oppressed by a rebel guerrilla group called The Shining Path.
On 21 May 1991, Sr Irene was fatally shot by members of The Shining Path for her work with the poor.
Compassion is the value of McCormack House and the motto, “On Wings of Compassion” reflects this.
PRAYER
God,
Sr Irene McCormack demonstrated to us in her life the love and compassion that God has for all. In her actions we see the love of Christ and the need to respect all. Allow us to be inspired to act, on the wings of compassion, to respond to the needs of others. Open our eyes and our hearts to those around us as we promote your love. We ask this in your name. Amen
Penola is a South Australian town 388km south east of Adelaide.
It was here in 1866, Mary MacKillop and Fr. Julian Tenison Woods, with the shared dream of providing a free Catholic education to the children of Australia, first established the order of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart and the first free Josephite school.
Courage is the value of Penola House and the motto, “Always with Courage” reflects this.
PRAYER
God,
You inspired Mary MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods to establish a school for the needy. It was their faith and their courage in Penola, that continues to enrich the lives of children through Catholic Education today. Inspire us Lord to stand up with courage, to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in need.
We ask this in your name. Amen
During the early years of the Order’s work across Australia the Sisters established a number of Houses of Providence. These houses served as a refuge for young women and children who did not have access to a safe home or food.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart have a strong faith in the providence of God. There were times they may not have been able to afford food to serve the people they supported, but their faith in God’s will always provide for them what was necessary.
Providence is the value of Providence House and the motto, “Trust in God’s will” reflects this.
PRAYER
God,
Mary MacKillop and the Sisters Of St. Joseph had great faith in your will. It was their faith in your care that allowed them to grow into the strong support network that they became to many young women and children. Help us to remember and trust in your providence when we struggle to see the positives in situations. Allow us God to see your ways.
We ask this in your name. Amen.
A wealthy Jewish man and philanthropist, Emmanuel Solomon generously supported anyone who assisted the poor and disadvantaged.
In 1871, when Mary was excommunicated from the church, Emmanuel provided free accommodation for Mary and the Sisters. Solomon was from a different faith, yet he had the utmost respect for Mary and the Sisters.
Inclusiveness is the value of Solomon House and the motto, “All equal in God’s eyes” reflects this.
PRAYER
God,
In Mary MacKillop and Solomon’s friendship we see no boundaries, no differences, no racism, no discrimination. Allow us to be inspired by their support and love for one another as we remember that all are equal in God’s eyes. Allow us to promote acceptance, diversity and love as we stand for inclusiveness of all.
We ask this in your name. Amen.
