Bunnings Trade Skills for Teens

Our students were selected to attend the Trade skills for teens at Bunnings Preston. This was a great opportunity to further develop their skills under the guidance of expertise of Bunnings trade specialists.

Bunnings firstly spoke about their roles and then conducted a tour of trade/timber yard, plumbing and electrical departments with the Bunnings trade specialists. The students were very quiet but interested and engaged, as most of them will be a part of the Macleod VET Electrotechnology cohort next year.

Then under the guidance of a Bunnings trade specialist, the students built a dog kennel. The Trade Specialist was very patient and attentive and the perfect person to lead this. He explained the importance of reading instructions. He let the students make mistakes, so they knew sometimes you need to fail to succeed. His final instruction was that a job is not finished until you clean up!

It was great watching the kids work together in an enthusiastic and engaging manner to solve problems and use trade tools to produce a great product. The students will return to Bunnings later this month (22nd of November) to present the dog kennel to the dog rescue group.

Bunnings provided a quick snack before the students had to head back to school. Donuts and flavoured milk as a reward brought smiles all round. Bunnings presented the students with their tool belt and some trade tools, which they were extremely grateful for.

A big thank you to Bunnings Preston for this great opportunity.

The students returned to Bunnings on the 22nd of November to present the dog kennel they built to the dog rescue group (Starting Over Dog Rescue). Beth, the rescue dog, was extremely happy to see her new kennel.

We are extremely grateful that our Macleod students participated in the Trade skills for teens at Bunnings Preston. This program was beneficial in many ways. It provided the students with exposure to the workforce/ career options, it further developed their skills under the guidance and expertise of the Bunnings trade specialists and the students experienced the joy of giving. Also, being rewarded with donuts, flavoured milk and tools put smiles on the students’ faces. Furthermore, the opportunity to build something and donate to the community is what the students really valued and treasured.
