SOFTBALL

State Champions

After a long bus ride to Waverley Softball centre, we were ready to ‘bowl’! We started off by practising our throwing and catching. Suddenly, we got the news that we had to be at diamond 3 as soon as possible, otherwise the other team would win on for-fitted! We dashed to the other side of the field, ready for the excitement ahead of us!

Our first game against EMC was going pretty good. We snuck a lot of home runs whenever the catcher missed the ball. That was the same with Northern Bay. There were a few fly balls where we had to all run back! There were also a lot of close calls. We got most of the batters out by getting the pitcher to stand on 4th base while the catcher was getting the ball. We would get the ball to the pitcher, and onto the batters shoulder (tagging them). The tagging rule did us a favour when we were batting. One of us ran to 4th base, and the pitcher had the ball while standing on the base, but we didn’t get out because they didn’t tag! Phew! Some of our hits were dangerously short! But there was no time to stand there and worry, it was just GO GO GO! Fortunately, that hit didn’t affect us.

At one stage when we were batting, a great hit was made. Bam! The ball was flaming through the air so gracefully, but it was heading right towards someone with their glove so high… And they missed! That’s when we were all the yelling and screaming, “RUN, RUN, HOME, HOME!” Let’s just say, a lot of home runs were made! 😃

Now, all we had to do, was win. As we went out to the field (diamond 9) for our next game, the team was a bit put off, by the sudden change in ground (from grass to gravel), and it also appeared to be larger than our last diamond! “Play!”. It had started. Come on girls, we need to win this! There were ALOT of balls and strikes, but when they did hit the ball, it went far! Miles away from the out-fielders! Balwyn was really good at sneaking every single time they could, however, someone snuck a bit too early, and although they made it to the next base was given out because she ran before the ball had left the bowlers hand. We were getting most people out by tagging them on 4th base.

We were all getting ready to bat, but then, we saw their bowler. She had the most intimidating, powerful, fast bowls, that went in a perfectly straight line! Most of our batters were getting strikes a lot, but when we hit it, we hit it HARD!  Clunk! The most incredible, powerful hit right before our eyes! It was going so far, so well… but then a glove went up, and caught it! How sad! But it wasn’t the end!

We were running multiple home runs with each hit, And sneaking home when ever we could! We were going so well, until the last innings. We were on 2 outs. We could not mess up. We hit, we run… and then, it was out. Oh no! We all waited in suspense to find out the scores. We scored 7, 2, 7, 4 runs. And they scored 5, 5, 3, 7 runs. They both added up to 20 runs! It was a draw! But wait, who won the state championships? They lost their first game… Drew on their second… and drew on their third game. We won our first! Won our second! And drew our third! WE WON! We all squealed and leaped with excitement and joy! WE DID IT! YAY!  Many thanks to Ms Spinks for coaching us.

“And congratulations to Macleod College, as the Victoria State Champions for softball!”

VOLLEYBALL

Term 4 is a busy time for Volleyball. This year we entered two girl's team for the district Year 08 round robin and one year 8 boys team. It was an extremely successful day for our Macleod students. The Year 8 boys won both their games in their pool to play in the final but unfortunately lost.

The girls were more successful with both Team 1 and Team 2 winning their pool and playing each other in the grand final with Team 1 coming out with the win. The Year 8 girls then played the NMR finals as reported in a previous newsletter.

On the same day we played the Year 08/09 Volleyball district round robin against Greensborough, Viewbank, Charles La Trobe and Bundoora. We had one boys team and two girls team. All teams did the school proud – playing with respect for each other and their opposition. The Year 8/9 Girls team 1 came out undefeated and play in the NMR finals in April next year. It was so pleasing to see the depth of talent of our students and the dedication they have to improve their skills at lunchtime trainings.

A big thank you to Kelissta Ayria who helped on both days with umpiring and coaching. Also to Rose Lazzaro who helped umpire in both competitions in between playing for the Year 8/9 girls.
