From the Classroom
Grade 2
We are very excited to share some highlights from our Grade 2 adventures! We have had a very busy term. Reading has certainly been a highlight in our classroom. Students have been participating in a book club and are always excited to share their thought and feeling about the book they are reading. During our mini lessons, we have been concentrating on the comprehension strategies through using a weekly big book. This helps our understanding and enjoyment of what we are reading. We are also improving our writing every day and we are now becoming confident independent writers. We have been focusing on writing a five-part narrative. Students have been exploring the use of adjectives and how they can make our writing more exciting. Our students are loving our open ended challenges and have been developing their critical thinking skills. In Maths we have been continuing our learning on addition and subtraction and using our place value knowledge to help us with this. Students really enjoyed learning about money and looking at different coins and notes from around the world. We are starting to learn about fractions and continue our work on Blitzmaster. Students practise answering addition or subtraction questions and it is a race against time! During theme, we have explored people who help us in the community in our F-2 multiage groups. We are all look forward to the visit from the CFA on Friday. Students showed their determination while completing the cross country earlier this term. I was very proud of the way they all tried their hardest and encouraged others along the way. We have been practicing our skipping in the lead up to Jump Rope for Heart on Friday, we have all made great improvements. We are also looking forward to gymnastics starting next week, this continues for the last 4 weeks of term. We have had an amazing term 2 and I can’t wait for what adventures we will have in term 3.
Science News
The Grade 5/6 students are continuing their learning about the states of matter. Last week, we confirmed our understanding of what makes gas matter, that it needs to have volume and weight. Students in both grades used a liquid (vinegar) and a solid (bicarb soda) to form a gas (carbon dioxide). We were able to capture the gas in a balloon, measure it to see how much gas we made. Students practiced lots of different measurement skills during this activity, including measuring the volume of a liquid and the circumference of a circle using a piece of string. It was wonderful to see the students’ eyes light up as their balloon inflated with the gas produced by the reaction of the vinegar and bicarb.
Art News
Grade 3/4 students have been working extremely hard on their dreamscapes inspired by Laura Blythman, which have taken many weeks to complete. Laura is an Australian watercolour collage artist who creates fantastical landscapes out of painted paper. Please enjoy a small selection of Grade 4 artworks here, and the rest of the Grade 3/4 creations can be found in the learning street outside their classrooms. I think you will agree they have done a magical job!
