ArtRage Art Excursion - Jenna Magnus

On Monday and Tuesday, the Year 9/10 Art Elective classes attended the ArtRage exhibition at Salamanca Arts Centre in the Long Gallery. It is always such an impressive showcase of art works produced by College students across Tasmania.

The purpose of the excursion was for our students to see the wide range of materials they can choose to work with and the variety of themes that they can explore in their own art making this year and beyond.

Once students had viewed all the work and read the accompanying artist statements they selected one art work to focus on. They completed a worksheet answering a series of questions and produced a small sketch of the artwork. This will then be included in their own journal work.

It was interesting to see which pieces students were most drawn to and discuss with them what qualities these works had that made them so appealing. Two artists in particular had students enthralled. Charlee Saunders “Government Issued Paranoia” was an impressive display representing the students' whole body of work. The technical skill and detail with which the biro pen drawings were rendered, along with the depth of thought and ideas being explored blew many of us away.

The other artist who drew much awe and admiration was Emi Pavlides and her oil painting titled ‘Microcosmic Murmurs’. This painting was one of a series depicting Tasmanian native bees in hyper realistic detail, emerging from a black background. We were fortunate to be able to see more of Emi Pavlides paintings of bees in the Handmark Gallery, on display in the Emerging Artist Exhibition on our Monday visit as it was the final day of the exhibition there.

It was inspiring for students to be able to make the connection and see the possible trajectory their own art making might take them on…..from being selected for the ArtRage exhibition in College, to having their work displayed and sold in a Gallery only a year later.

Legal & Business Studies - Heath Whiley

On Monday 3 and Thursday 6 June the Legal Studies and Business classes will be running their own businesses during lunchtime in the Drama Studio. Students are tasked with designing and organising their own businesses and then selling their chosen products at school.

All products will sell for under $5 and include a variety of baked goods, treats and slime. Advertising for the products has started to go up around the school, and the students have worked incredibly hard in a very short period to pull it all together. Not only do they have to come up with a product to sell, components need to be sourced, products need to be made, advertising needs to be worked out and all of this is done on a tight budget.

The products are available until sold out, and importantly all money raised goes towards a charity of the students choosing.
