Conversations

Conversations hold an enormous amount of power in our lives, far beyond exchanging information. We know that speaking for some people is never easy, in fact even as adults we still have a lot to learn about the power of a conversation. We are forever analysing the power of words, even finding times where we maybe over analysing words and critiquing how people say things.

Here are some key aspects of conversations:

  • Understanding ourselves: sometimes the best way to understand our own thoughts and feelings is to talk about them. By taking the time to talk through our worries with a close friend, family member or colleague we can gain clarity and a fresh perspective on our own internal world.
  • Building connections: conversations are the foundation of strong relationships. By taking the time to listen and talk through situations, we share magical memories, thoughts and feelings which allows us the chance to foster empathy and understanding.
  • Spark change: a thoughtful conversation can have a huge impact on one's perspective. Listening to others' opinions can open us up to new ideas. It can be the stepping stone for personal growth or even ignite a spark of creativity.
  • Problem solving: when we face a challenge, talking it through with someone can help us in various ways. Brainstorming solutions and considering different perspectives can at times give us the opportunity to arrive at a more powerful course of action.
  • Overcoming division: in a world with differing opinions, a conversation can be the bridge that allows us to connect despite our unique differences. By taking the time to listen to each other and fostering respectful dialogue we can work towards finding a common ground.

All of our students have the capacity to be heard regardless of their age, they have the power to make people stop and listen. It is our job as adults to guide them on how to do so in a respectful and thought provoking manner to set them up to be powerful independent people of the future.

By contemplating the power of conversation I then reflected upon the dialogue that I have had with staff, students and families around the school grounds this term. Making sure that wherever I have been having conversations to always have at the forefront of my mind my “why” statement: “To support and guide others so that we can have a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued

It was not until I started creating my list that I realised quite how many conversations I have had thus far. Sure, I have had many conversations about the Melbourne Football Team and the need for them to pick up their act, however, I know I am being critical of my team. But, on a more serious note I think we have a lot to be proud of here at Mount Carmel College and the conversations we are having with everyone to create a space that allows each individual to shine in their own way.

Here is a list of just some of the valuable conversations being had around the grounds:

  • Being an upstander instead of a bystander: although it can be a challenge at times to stand up, it is important to have an awareness of helping oneself and those around to ensure that poor behaviour is not accepted as ok or even the norm.
  • Uniform Requirements: reminding students the importance of wearing the uniform correctly and with pride. To have a high standard of personal presentation at all times.
  • Bus expectations: reminding students that everyone wants to travel in peace, that no one should be harassing other students, nor should they be leaving a mess on the bus for the drivers to clean up. Good habits and practices help to keep them safe for everyone on and around the bus.
  • Behaviour concerns: discussing the importance of following staff instructions to allow everyone the chance to engage in their learning. By doing this will also allow themselves the chance to grow as individuals. We want to continue creating an environment which promotes the social and emotional wellbeing of all.
  • Inappropriate device usage: using phones to contact home during school hours is not helpful, that the adults on site should be informed if the student is feeling unwell. Then our wonderful staff in student services will be able to make contact home on behalf of the student.
  • Respect: informing students that it does not cost anything to be kind and respectful.  By showing respect, we create a more positive and productive environment for ourselves and those around us

In today's society, conversations, especially deep and meaningful ones, can sometimes feel like a lost art. But as we have seen, the power of conversation to connect, inspire, and promote understanding is undeniable. So next time you have the opportunity, engage in a conversation, and see what kind of wonderful magic unfolds.

Thank You

Last week saw us come together as staff and acknowledge the hard work of our Support Staff. Every day our Support Staff take the time to ensure Mount Carmel College runs smoothly. They have to navigate so many things throughout their day, from sourcing extra layers of clothing for students who have forgotten their jumper, to preparing their recess and lunches each day. From making sure the grounds are aesthetically pleasing to checking the safety of events for excursions to occur. From rewriting tasks for all students to be able to access the learning to taking calls from the community. We say thank you to all the hard work of everyone around the grounds. We are wonderfully blessed to have so many fabulous staff helping ensure our community continues to grow and shine in so many different ways.

Speak Up StayChatTY!

Next month will see the Mount Carmel College community join together to support SpeakUp StayChatTY! Shorts Day.  Students will have the opportunity to wear shorts with their sports uniform whilst bringing a gold coin donation to support a very worthy cause - one that the Wellbeing Leaders in both the the Primary and Secondary school are passionate about.  More information will be emailed to families soon so that you can search the wardrobes for those summer shorts.
