Otway National Park
Melton Secondary College’s Year 11 Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies class went to The Otway National Park on 13th and 14th of May in 2024. We experienced camping and hiking which involved setting up our own tents and using trangias to cook dinner. During the hikes, we visited the beach representing a coastal environment as well as a waterfall. The trip allowed us to experience new parts of nature while getting to know each other better by completing hikes and sharing a tent another person. Some funny moments we shared on camp include playing trivia and playing sardines in the dark. We also enjoyed sharing an experience together that we know we will remember for years to come. The most enjoyable things for most people would be finally finishing the walk and being able to rest after a long day.

On the first day of our VCE Outdoor Education trip (Monday 13th), we did a short 5.8km walk to Lower Kalimina Falls. On this walk we saw some Dickson Ferns and plenty of fallen gumtrees. After that we returned to Allenvale Mill campground to set up camp for the night before departing to begin the St George River walk which was 2.7km each way. We went down to the beach and had some time to play with sports equipment although, we didn’t have a lot of room though since it was high tide. On this walk we saw Eastern Grey Kangaroos and some washed up crabs. We then returned to Allenvale Mill campground to cook our dinners on trangias where the majority of us had pasta for dinner, since it was a simple option to cook. We then played some trivia and a few outdoor games in the dark (sardines). On day two, we woke up nice and early to eat breakfast and pack up our campsite. We drove up to Teddys Lookout to complete the Teddys Lookout and Otway Ranges loop walk (3.5km). It was a pretty hard walk for majority of the group since the end was mostly just walking up hill towards Teddys Lookout. Once we reached the top we got back on the bus and drove into Lorne for lunch. We also visited the information centre in Lorne to find out more about the area and some students even bought some souvenirs. Overall, the camp was fun, it was a great experience for all, and we learned quite a bit about the area.
