Education in Faith

A snapshot of RE Learning in 5/6MB

This term in RE, the Year 5/6 students are learning about our Catholic Tradition and how it compares to different Faith Traditions. To begin the unit, we started off by exploring the question…”What is Religion?” Here are some of our initial thoughts and ideas…

I think a religion is having different thoughts on what God or Buddha could be. Each different religion believes in different things. (Ted S)

I think a religion is when you believe in a God. You could be any type of religion and still believe in one God. (Alicia W)

I think a religion is something people believe in that makes everything and is the one and only creator of the world. (Art T)

A religion is when multiple people believe in things for example people believing God and Jesus and think the bible is saying the right thing. It’s a group of people sharing their same perspective or belief. (Ariel M)

Religion is a group of people believing in something, usually it's a being that made earth. (Gabby W)

I think that a religion is possibly having a certain person such as God or Buddha to sometimes sacrifice for you and show you the difference between right and wrong ,so in your life you don't go around and sin against God or that religious person in your religion or life. (Chloe O)

I think that Religion is a belief of some sort of a Holy spirit like God or Jesus. (Anna H)

A religion is a group of people that believe and follow a person or thing.  (James G)

I believe that a religion is where there is a certain type of believing in God and people follow God in a different way than others.  (Kate M)

I think religion is time so you can pray, think about God and reflect  on your day, week and even month.  (Sya J)

I believe a religion is a group of people that listen to God through different stories. (Teddy T)

A religion is when you believe in some type of God that is around you as someone you can talk to and that you trust in. The god can be anything or anyone you believe and that he isn’t just there but he does things for you and your world.  (Poppy T)

A religion is something someone believes in. Most religions are about God and Jesus. Different religions have different things at different times. (Zac T)

A religion is what someone could believe in and also where they come from. (Lachie G)

A religion is a group of people who believe in someone. (Orlando I)

After some research, we developed the following definition as a class.

A religion is a group of people who share the same set of beliefs. This set of beliefs guides them how to act and they are followers of these beliefs. The believers or the faithful pray and worship a spiritual being such as a God. There are usually a set of rituals that are followed and celebrated.

In pairs, students are now researching and creating Podcasts about a different Faith Tradition. We are exploring six World Religions (Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Taoism and Sikkhism) in the following areas.

  • Origins/History
  • Teachings/Beliefs
  • Branches/Denominations
  • Rules/Laws
  • Symbols
  • Festivals/Celebrations
  • Places of Worship
  • Leaders
  • Book/s
  • What does worship look like

Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

Jesus went home with his disciples, and such a crowd collected that they could not even have a meal. When his relatives heard of this, they set out to take charge of him, convinced he was out of his mind.

The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, ‘Beelzebul is in him,’ and, ‘It is through the prince of devils that he casts devils out.’ So he called them to him and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last. And if a household is divided against itself, that household can never stand. Now if Satan has rebelled against himself and is divided, he cannot stand either - it is the end of him. But no one can make his way into a strong man’s house and burgle his property unless he has tied up the strong man first. Only then can he burgle his house.

‘I tell you solemnly, all men’s sins will be forgiven, and all their blasphemies; but let anyone blaspheme against the Holy Spirit and he will never have forgiveness: he is guilty of an eternal sin.’ This was because they were saying, ‘An unclean spirit is in him.’

His mother and brothers now arrived and, standing outside, sent in a message asking for him. A crowd was sitting round him at the time the message was passed to him, ‘Your mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for you.’ He replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking round at those sitting in a circle about him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.’

Discussion Questions

1. Why did Jesus’ family think he was crazy?

2. Why did they want to get him away from the crowd?

3. What did Jesus mean when he asked who his mother and brothers were?
