Wicked

This semester for Year 10 Music and Year 10 Event Management we attend a matinee performance of "WICKED”. It was an incredible experience. “WICKED” tells the story of the witches of OZ – from The Wizard of OZ and serves as a prequal to the evolution of Glinda the Good and The Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba’s friendship. The live orchestra was outstanding, everything was on point. I could hear the different instruments and the skill you need to play like that. What really amazed me was the super quick costume changes, especially Glinda (the Good). This character had the most costume changes and would have less than a minute off stage then be back with a whole new outfit. I absolutely loved the Emerald City costumes. They were so detailed, and every single one was different and unique yet following the same colour scheme.

The singing and acting were astonishing. How can people express their voice so loud and clear like that? What impressed me was the lighting and set changes and all the things that must have taken hours and hours to perfect every single little moment of the show. I loved the crazy plot twists that I did not see coming, it was so interesting to see how it intertwined and aligned up with the Wizard of OZ.

The finale of the first half was incredible, ...  like honestly amazing! Elphaba was flying and ‘Defying Gravity’ - literally! The chorus were singing and dancing around Elphaba as she elevated up into the air. It was so remarkable. How could Act Two equal such a climactic end to Act One? I won’t spoil any surprises here – let's just say I loved it so much. “WICKED” is now my favourite musical. Do yourself a favour if you haven’t already seen it. SEE IT!

Chicago

On Wednesday the 1st of May the year 10 Drama class was lucky enough to attend a live theatre performance – “Chicago”, the Musical. It was an amazing experience. It tells the story of Roxie Hart and Valma Kelly as they both fight not only for the celebrity lawyer Billy Flynn, but the fame that the murder conviction has given them both. Basically, the musical is about murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery. A couple of highlights from the show included the live band on stage, the amazing dancing, wonderful costumes, great lighting and the magnificent  ‘Her Majesties Theatre’.

Although ‘Cell Block Tango’ and ‘Both Reached for the Gun’ were sensational, the best number in my opinion was ‘All I Care About’ – performed by Billy Flynn (played by Anthony Warlow).

Thank you to Ms. Mummé & Ms. Corry for giving us this opportunity.

"The Roof is Caving In” at La Mama Theatre

On Wednesday the 8th of May the VCE Drama Class saw the second of their VCAA required performances, “The Roof is Caving In”. Set in an urban Australian landscape, “The Roof is Caving In” explores the difficulties of growing up and expressing yourself. The performance followed two young, freshly out of home rental tenants, Bronwyn and Hester, who learn to navigate the harsh rental home they inhabit, as well as learn to mange their internal and interpersonal conflicts. The two characters ultimately leave their ‘unliveable home’ as more aware individuals who are more prepared for their future challenges in life. The performance used an Urban Australian Gothic performance style as demonstrated through the blurring of the familiar domestics and the strange and uncanny. An ensemble of musician is eerily a part of the set design which helps underscore the claustrophobic and isolating atmosphere of the play. The unsettling dream like sequences and confronting monologues characterise the surrealist performance and conveys the often frighting and confronting elements of moving into a new stage of life.

This was a complex and thought-provoking performance and certainly stimulated some intense class discussion. We have all gained a lot by seeing new Australian drama at the iconic La Mama theatre.

Thanks to Ms. Mummé for organising our theatre visits and Ms. Corry for joining in and enjoying the performance ‘aesthetic’. We’ve all really loved attending these performances.
