Classroom News

PREP

First of all, we wanted to wish all of the wonderful women in Prep a Happy Mother’s Day. We appreciate and recognise all you do for our Prep children and we hope you had a lovely day on Sunday.

We have been working very hard in our learning classroom and have been doing lots of reading, writing and addition. This week we started our unit of subtraction and we look forward to seeing all the things our Preppies can learn about subtraction.

Wide Smiles will be coming to see us in week 6 and will see any student in Prep who handed in their form in early Term 1.

Next Friday, all of the local Catholic Primary schools are coming together to celebrate Fr. Michael’s 50th year of being a Priest. We are so blessed and fortunate to have Fr. Michael, as he is an integral part of our school and wider community.

GRADE 1/2

Year 2 classes are very excitedly getting ready for their Prayer Gathering tomorrow. We look forward to seeing our families in the church to pray with us. Year 1 classes will be leading Prayer Gathering in two weeks time on 31st May.

Year 1s are missing Jodie, but Rose is helping us a lot. Jodie is doing well now. Lots of us have visited the Book Fair in the library. Thank you to Wendy for organising this wonderful event.

The best part of some of the Year 1s week has been:

George - building an army crawl in the sand pit.

Louise - going to the Book Fair

Winnie - doing my writing.

Charli - being in the playground with her friends

GRADE 3/4

We have been very busy in our classrooms over the last couple of weeks. During Literacy, our students have been continuing to learn about persuasive language and the techniques used to persuade the audience to see their point of view. We have been experimenting with writing our own persuasive texts, but ensuring we write using correct punctuation and paragraphs.

In Numeracy, we have started our addition and subtraction topic. This involves learning a number of strategies that we can use to calculate the answers to problems. We also encourage all students to continue learning their counting goals this term. By mastering these counting goals, this will help them to easier grasp the multiplication and division unit of work in Term 3.

Next Wednesday, we look forward to participating in the ‘National Simultaneous Storytime’ reading of the book ‘Bowerbird Blues’ and completing tasks related to this.

Finally, we hope everyone enjoyed celebrating the wonderful mother figures in their lives last Sunday. The children enjoyed the opportunity to make and gift something to their mother figures.

Alex- “We celebrated Mother’s Day by letting mum choose her dinner.”

Nyabel - “We celebrated Mother’s Day by having lunch at La Porchetta.”

Hudson - “I celebrated my mum by giving her flowers and presents.”

Paddy - “I gave mum a present to say, “Thank you for caring for us.”

Claire- “We celebrated with my mum and our grandparents by going out for breakfast.”

GRADE 5/6

We are right in the thick of our Term in Grades 5 and 6.

In Grade 5, we have just finished off our Narrative writing unit and will be moving onto some Poetry exploration. We are still working our way through 'War Horse' for our novels studies.

In Maths, we have been developing our Multiplication and Division knowledge; this week investigating the Distributive Property for solving multiplication problems and practising factors and multiples. Over the next 2 weeks, we will also be completing some Location Maths work.

We thoroughly enjoyed welcoming Colac East and Millville Kinders to our school on Monday. The children completed a portrait activity and 'showed off' our school with a tour and a play on our junior playground. We have very much enjoyed our ongoing connections with our Kinder children in Grade 5.

A reminder that Jade is away for the next 2 weeks so any contact is to be directed to Rachel.

The Grade 6s are wrapping up their Poetry unit for Literacy and their Multiplication and Division unit for Maths.

In our 5/6 Inquiry unit, 'Australia Becomes A Nation', we are about to introduce the students to an assessment task that will celebrate all their learning on this topic. This will be completed in class time over the coming weeks.

Tomorrow a group of our 5/6 children will be participating in Football and Netball. We wish them luck as they represent our school with pride and determination.

A huge congratulations to Enzo and Eian Soliman and their family who have recently become official Australian citizens! We are so lucky that they now call Australia, and our school, their home!

Have a great weekend everyone!
