This week in Library class we have started with an overview of the school library and how it will be used this year, when I am around only three days a week. I will be working on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, except for Book Fair week at the end of April, Book Week in the last week of August and the last week of fourth term when I will be at school each day. Library Club will be supervised by myself on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in the first half of Lunch and Michelle Harmer will supervise Library Club on Wednesday and Friday. Some of our grade 6 Library captains will be on hand each day to run Storytime for the younger grades.
Library class is part of our school literacy program. It is there to support reading engagement, research skills and curriculum outcomes.
As you may have seen in the news lately, there are many studies that show that by teenage years, there are growing numbers of students who are not reading to the level of students of past generations. Reading is a valuable skill to have for life, work and relaxation. Having the time to find reading materials to enjoy is an important part of reading engagement. That is one of goals in the school library.
Throughout the year students will get to listen to picture story books and narrative non-fiction that relate to the Learner profiles, celebrations and commemorations, Book Week judging or their units of Inquiry.
Middle and Upper year students will also start to learn a little more about the Library catalogue, how to sign into their dashboard in the catalogue and how different sections of the library are organised, using DDC - Decimals and Alpha codes This will assist them to help me reshelve books correctly and locate a book once they have found it in the catalogue.
These students will also start to explore World Book Online and REDeLEARN, in preparation for research projects.
Please encourage your children to bring a waterproof library bag to school to borrow books each week or two. The bags can be purchased from the PSW Uniform shop. If you happen to have bags that belonged to past students, please consider donating them to the school office, so they can continue to have a life.
The end of April will see me run the Lamont Book Fair which will give us credit (at up to 30% in book commission) to buy full priced books from them during the rest of the year.
Lastly, Scholastic Book Club will run again this year. Much of the reward points earnt are spent on English and Welfare resources for the school, along with some books for the Library.
