Please see below St Aidan's Homework Statement of Practice.

HOMEWORK STATEMENT OF PRACTICE

Definition

Homework is a valuable part of schooling. It allows for practising, extending and consolidating work done in class. Homework provides training for students in planning and organising time and develops a range of skills in identifying and using information resources. Additionally, it establishes habits of study, concentration and self-discipline.

Statement

At St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School we believe that homework: 

  • encourages and fosters student’s ownership of their learning both in and out of the classroom
  • develops fluency and work towards students’ individual learning goals
  • helps to reinforce and consolidate outcomes covered  
  • encourages positive family interactions
  • allows flexible time for children to pursue their own learning 
  • develops life skills as well as academic skills to cope with life beyond school and home
  • provides opportunities for parents and teachers to work together for the benefit of all children.

Positive Learning Habits

Homework consists of a matrix incorporating positive learning habits that are important in preparing students to become:

  • effective learners who are able to problem solve
  • fair minded and empathetic members of a community
  • creative, imaginative and innovative thinkers
  • collaborators - working well in team situations
  • organised planners
  • responsible and accountable for their learning goals
  • resilient learners - persevering through challenges
  • efficient users of technology

Expectations

  1. Homework will be sent home on a Monday and is due on a Thursday over a two week cycle. (Week 2-3, Week 4-5, Week 6-7, Wellbeing Week 8, Week 9-10)
  2. The Homework Matrix will consist of English, Maths and Religious Education tasks that are non-negotiable - MUST DO. 
  3. Homework is differentiated K-6
  4. The Homework Matrix will also include optional tasks - MAY DO. 
  5. Homework is not sent home during Wellbeing Week of each term. 
  6. Homework is not set for extended holidays or long term absences.
  7. Homework activities are explained clearly prior to being sent home.
  8. If homework is not completed, it is an expectation that the work is to be completed over the weekend and handed to the class teacher on the following Monday morning, unless  there has been communication between the teacher and parent.

  9. When necessary, teachers will communicate with parents to discuss homework habits.

     

    ** Kindergarten Homework may be modified.

 

STUDENT ABSENCES - SCHOOL WORK

A reminder to all of our parents that if your child is at home due to illness or away due to travel, they are not required to complete any schoolwork. In accordance with St Aidan's School Policy, teachers are not obligated to send work home for students who are unwell or on travel leave. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
