Sustainable Lunches | Save money and play a part in decreasing impacts on our environment

At Frankston High School, sustainability is a significant area of concern. Parents/Carers can make a huge impact by modelling sustainable habits at home that follow through to school, especially in the lunches they pack each day. The good news? Sustainable choices often save money too.

Simple swaps can reduce both waste and expenses. Reusable containers and bottles might cost a little upfront but last far longer than disposable items. Buying snacks, fruit, and yoghurt in bulk and portioning them into reusable tubs is usually cheaper than buying single serves. Drinking tap water in metal or glass bottles instead of factory/processed bottled drinks not only cuts plastic waste but also costs much less.

Encouraging children to help plan and pack their lunches builds awareness and reduces uneaten food. Discarded sandwiches and fruit are often seen leaving students’ hands  and landing in bins around our school. Choosing seasonal fruit and simple home-prepared items over pre-packaged options also helps keep costs down while supporting sustainable habits.

These small, practical steps show that caring for the environment doesn’t mean spending more, it’s about rethinking how we use what we already have. Every reusable container and thoughtful choice demonstrates to students that sustainability is achievable, affordable, and part of everyday family life.

Being more sustainable means a better world for all members of the Frankston High School community.
