YEAR 2/3 CLASS

We have had a busy and exciting few weeks in our Year 2/3 classroom!

The students have been settling in well and working hard, showing great resilience in their learning.

In Maths, we are working on place value and recognising where the different parts of a number fit in a place value table (ones, tens, hundreds and beyond).

This is a fantastic skill to develop as it forms the foundation of the base-10 number system. A strong understanding of place value helps children understand the size of numbers, count efficiently, read and write large numbers correctly and perform calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division- especially with multi-digit numbers.

We are practising breaking numbers apart, building them in different ways, and explaining our thinking. This foundational knowledge is key to future success in Maths!

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been learning about our identities and how we can change physically, socially and emotionally as we grow older.

We have discussed how change can sometimes feel exciting — but also challenging.

To help manage tricky feelings, students have been learning and practising coping strategies, including:

  • Talk it out – speak to a trusted adult or friend
  • Calm breathing – take slow breaths in and out
  • Positive self-talk – “I can handle this.”
  • Take a break – quiet time, movement, or drawing
  • Problem-solve – think of one small step that might help

We even played some “near impossible” games to explore the different emotions we can experience when something feels hard. This helped us recognise feelings like frustration, determination and pride, and practise using our coping strategies in real time!

In Literacy, we have begun our InitiaLit and Spellex units. These are explicit teaching programs that focus on understanding spelling rules, recognising spelling patterns and building confidence with trickier words.

Students are learning that some words are not spelt the way they sound, and that knowing patterns and rules can help them become stronger, more independent spellers.

I cannot wait to see the growing confidence the students achieve throughout the year!

YEAR 4/5/6 CLASS

It has been a wonderful (and very busy!) start to Term 1 in our Grade 4/5/6 classroom.

Students have done an incredible job settling back into school life, getting to know how our classroom runs, and practising all of our routines and expectations. It has also been fantastic to see our Grade 4/5/6 students really step up into leadership roles by supporting others, making thoughtful choices, and setting a positive tone for our class.

Literacy

This week we began reading our first class text, A Ghost in My Suitcase by Gabrielle Wang. The novel follows Celeste, a 12-year-old Australian girl who travels to China after the death of her mother and discovers surprising connections to her family’s culture and history. Alongside themes of identity, belonging, and grief, the story includes adventure and mystery as Celeste learns about Chinese traditions and ghost hunting.

Maths

In Maths we have started our Data Representation unit, with a focus on dot plots. Students have been learning how to create dot plots, read and interpret them, and use them to describe what a set of data is showing. We are working on building confidence with displaying data clearly and understanding what we see, trusting our knowledge and not second guessing ourselves!

Buddies

Buddy reading and library time has officially begun! Fridays will be our special time to connect with our Foundation/Year 1 buddies through reading together and helping them borrow books for the week. This is a lovely way to build connection across the school, and it also gives our Grade 4/5/6 students a chance to demonstrate leadership, responsibility, and kindness.
