JC Social Skills Groups

Below is the timetable for the JC Social Skills Clubs starting this week. These groups will likely evolve as we get to know our new Foundation cohort and Year 1 enrolments better.

Due to the large number of needs this year, the format will be slightly different with two "Games Club" groups playing inside once play time a week, and a third group of individuals who I will observe outside whenever possible. Some of these students have been taken off of Tier 2 intervention due to data demonstrating appropriate growth, requiring some support to integrate these behaviours into their 'real world play', and others we are monitoring to see if they need to be moved into Tier 2 interventions.

All JC classroom teachers appreciate you keeping an eye out for these students in the yard, encouraging expected behaviours, and praising demonstration of their goals. If there are any incidents involving these students please ensure you chronicle so that we can monitor the impact of this intervention and tweak it to suit student needs.

REMINDER:

If you are a Foundation teacher, please fill out this social skills form by the end of Week 4. This way we can triage based on level of need, have awareness of student goals and can measure growth over time. I have listed those students who were flagged in the transition process, but you may wish to add other students if you have seen a need so far.

Social Skills Questionnaire

The NFER (National Foundation for Education Research) social skills questionnaire is designed to help staff, students and families understand which skills students have already aquired and those that remain next steps. It is not exhaustive, but a good starting point to understand where a child may require more explicit teaching and practice.

This questionnaire can be used in a few different ways:

  1. To inform social skills groups (Tier 2 interventions)
  2. To enable classroom teachers to support individual students with strategies to be used in class and monitor growth over time. This can also be used to inform IEPs/BSPs, parent meetings, and notes for external professionals working with a child.
  3. For an (older) student to self-assess and monitor their growth over time.

Please feel free to make use of this tool by making a copy of the master document
