Prep Shape Explorers

In the last few weeks of Term 3, the Preps have been learning all about shapes through fun, hands-on and digital activities. We have been building our spatial awareness by finding and describing shapes in our classroom and around the school, talking about features like sides and corners, and sorting shapes into different groups. This learning links to the Victorian Curriculum: Numeracy 2.0, where students begin to understand space, shape, and patterns by recognising, naming, and comparing shapes in the world around them.

A favourite activity has been using tangrams to make pictures and patterns, where students discovered how shapes can fit together to make new ones. We also had lots of fun going on “shape hunts”, spotting and naming shapes in everyday objects. These activities have helped students to become more confident in talking about shapes, while also practising their problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills, important steps for their future learning in mathematics.

Sustainability Festival

Jaden 5/6B Environmental Leader, Marine Ambassador

On Thursday, I went to the Schools Sustainability Festival at St Kilda Town Hall. There were lots of schools there organising workshops. My favourite was the paper burritos. After the workshops, the schools went to the St Kilda Botanical Gardens where we joined other workshops. Some of them included: finding insects, talking about the 10 cent refund scheme, and learning about insects. We also had lunch there, which was very enjoyable due to the weather. I really enjoyed the day and thought my peers enjoyed it too.

This was a fun day with kids teaching kids and doing lots of activities. We got to get up into groups and compare all the different workshops, and we could take home some of the plants, squishies and more. Everyone had a great time and learnt new ways to stay sustainable.

Ten students from different 5/6 classes went on an excursion to the Schools Sustainability Festival with Mme Wilson and Mme Leduque. We were split into two groups and did different activities. My group ‘B’ did ‘burrito’ plant pots, and put animal and plant pictures corresponding to their names. We had lunch at the St Kilda Botanical Gardens, did some more activities and had a great day meeting kids from other schools.

This Thursday a group of representatives from our school went to a sustainability festival where we got to participate in some workshops run by students from different schools. One group participated in some fun games to learn about how to protect the ecosystem, like a biology IQ test. After, we went to the St Kilda Botanical Gardens where we had lunch. Then we learned how to count in an aboriginal language and planted a seed inside a clay animal.

On Thursday 11th September, selected students from Year 5 and 6 went to the Schools Sustainability Festival at St Kilda Town Hall. We experienced a few workshops. There, we were separated into two groups of five. One of my favourite activities was seed balls. We were given a handful of pink and purplish paper clay and shaped them into small balls. Then we took dirt and placed it inside. Then we chose a seed. I chose a nasturtium seed. Afterwards, we closed the ball and took some more paper clay to make an animal, and I made a turtle. I also like when the Caulfield Grammar kids told us about how they adopted a dolphin and a whale! I loved the day!

Today I went to the Schools Sustainability Festival. There were ten students from CJC including me who came and we split into two groups. All of us caught the tram to St Kilda Town Hall. First we found our seats and listened to three or four speeches. In our groups we went into our different activities. My group went to play a game about different topics of sustainability. After we did some of our activities we had morning tea then we did more workshops before walking to the botanical gardens. We had lunch then we finished the rest of our activities.

This Thursday some students went on an excursion about sustainability and learnt new things on how to be more sustainable. One of the workshops was making a sustainable squishy. To make them we had to sew felt pieces and add leftover velvet on the inside, and there we had our sustainable squishy!

On Thursday 11th of September, ten students from CJC went to a Schools Sustainability Festival. We went to St Kilda Town Hall. We learned all about how to be more sustainable and care for the environment. We made lots of cool things like newspaper burritos (not edible!) and sustainable squishies. At lunch we went to the botanical gardens, ate lunch, and did more activities. I enjoyed everything and it was so fun.

This Thursday, we went to the Schools Sustainability Festival. It was SUPER FUN! At the start, people made speeches about aboriginal culture, radical regeneration and more. Then we set off to our activities. My favourite was a workshop where we used leftover fabrics to make a squishy. It was so COOL. It was the best experience EVER!

Hello everyone! This is Leon and on 11/9/25 we went to the Schools Sustainability Festival. It was SO FUN even though the whole class didn’t go. Sad. We did a lot of workshops like seed balls and super sustainability squishies. Nineteen schools participated in this event.
