Year 5

What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 1 & 2

Welcome back to all our families for Term 4, we hope everyone had a lovely break and is enthusiastic about our time ahead. We are looking forward to hearing all of the fun stories and adventures that you got up to on the holidays!

Term 4 will be full of work, fun and some exciting activities we have as we close out a great year. Some of the key elements will be Year 5 students preparing for their incoming buddies for next year and preparing for their new interschool sport activities for Term 1 2026.

Students will also continue their leadership workshops with the Year 1s and will engage with other year levels as well.

Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about...

Wellbeing

Students will learn how to recognise emotions and engage in positive self-talk through Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons.

Literacy

Students will be reading our new novel titled ‘Can You See Me’ and completing the associated sentence and text level activities. We will continue the Word Origins spelling lessons. The students are enjoying finding out the meaning of new morphemes each week.

Maths

We will be continuing with Fractions to reinforce the key areas for the students, along with introducing new focus areas. We will also be completing some work on Probability, a topic that involves some fun and engaging games for the students.

Knowledge Unit

Health is the focus for this term’s Knowledge Unit. The students will primarily be introduced to a range of different concepts, with the initial lessons targeting an overall understanding of health, preventative health with a lens on diet and community health.

Homework

Mathletics tasks

30minutes of reading each night

Year 6

What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 1 & 2

Term 3 was an exciting and action-packed term for our Year 6 students! They showcased their sporting skills at House Athletics Day and during friendly Ultimate Frisbee games, while in Numeracy they explored fractions, decimals, angles, and probability. In Literacy, students began learning about narrative structure and techniques to enhance their writing, while also enjoying The Grandest Bookshop in the World and celebrating the magic of Book Week. A highlight of the term was performing their spectacular production of Aladdin, and they also shared a special afternoon with their Prep buddies to celebrate 100 Days of Prep.

Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about:

Wellbeing

In the first two weeks of Term 4, our Year 6 students will be participating in the ElephantEd Program as part of their Wellbeing learning. Through these sessions, they will engage in age-appropriate discussions about consent and personal image, helping to build their understanding, confidence, and respect for themselves and others.

Literacy

In the first two weeks of Term 4, our Year 6 students will complete their novel study of The Grandest Bookshop in the World, reflecting on its themes and ideas. They will continue developing their narrative writing skills, focusing on structure and rich language choices. Students will also return to exploring etymological spelling through the Word Origins program to strengthen their vocabulary and spelling strategies.

Maths

Over the next two weeks, Year 6 students will be diving into an exciting range of Numeracy concepts. They will explore angles by identifying, measuring and calculating complementary, supplementary, and vertically opposite angles, as well as constructing shapes and solving angle problems. Students will also begin a transformation and location project, where they’ll work with negative numbers, coordinates, and shape transformations on a Cartesian plane through hands-on numeracy games and challenges. This will help build their problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and mathematical thinking skills.

Knowledge Unit

In the first two weeks of Term 4, our Year 6 students will begin their new Science focus on Environmental Science, exploring the world of physical sciences. They will be introduced to key concepts such as energy generation, electrical circuits, and how light is absorbed, reflected, and refracted, creating a wonder wall to spark curiosity and questions. Students will also investigate the different types of energy and how energy can be transformed and transferred.

Homework

Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. We encourage students to bring in their diaries every Monday to show their teacher what they have read each week.  Additionally, they will receive Mathletics tasks every fortnight to reinforce and build on their mathematical knowledge. Please check to see if there are any new tasks assigned on Mathletics.
