Specialist Feature News - Performing Arts

Selamat Siang Semuanya,

The Performing Arts space has been buzzing with music and movement as students move into their independent group tasks to showcase their Term 3 learning.

This week's senior class warm-up was a tutting challenge (hand dancing 🙌🏻), which proved to be a whole lot of fun! It has been an engaging way to start our lessons - check out some of our senior students' fabulous efforts!

Our Foundation students have been exploring beat and rhythm through body percussion,

keeping time with different songs using 'claps', 'pats' and 'stomps'. They have explored the Kodály method by rhythmically clapping patterns using 'ta' (quarter note), 'ti ti' (two eighth notes) and rest counts. It has been wonderful to see them pick up this method so quickly! They are moving on to their shared song for performance, a Yarrabil language song titled 'No Buru (Kangaroo) on the Bus'. We look forward to sharing it with you soon!

Grade 1/2 are learning a shared song, with students working hard on learning the lyrics and choreographing their dance moves, with an instrumental accompaniment to follow shortly. This Acknowledgement of Country and Australian Animals Song brings together their term focus on rhythm, beat, communicative movement/dance and instrumental music. The students can't wait to share all of their hard work with the wider community soon!

Our Senior Grades 3-6 are working on multi-sensory storytelling in small groups. Each group has selected an Indigenous Dreamtime story to retell using both visual and auditory elements, which will see them independently use their soundscaping skills developed across the first part of the term. Students have chosen a visual medium, including slide decks, collated images, puppetry, sketches or dance, and are now working on recording their oral narration and an original soundscape to create a multi-sensory experience for their audience. Sound creation may come in the form of instruments, body percussion or vocals, but can also be collected from digital resource libraries or recorded from the local school environment. Look out for their finished work on SeeSaw next term!

I invite all parents, families and caregivers to ask the MPRPS children about their Performing Arts learning; at the heart of our program is sharing and communication, and having students talk through their experiences can help them retain learning and even find new areas of passion in music, dance or drama.

Terima kasih
