Learning in Action
📖 Literacy
We have finished our whole-class reading of Hatchet! We asked some of the students to reflect on the text, and here is what they said:
"Personally, Hatchet is the best book I have ever read. It is an immaculate novel that gets me on the edge of my seat." ~ Brandon
"Engagement level 10/10. No, more like 100/10! Captivating you into its wild journeys and secrets of the wilderness." ~ Mayah
Word Work
We have commenced learning about the morpheme script/scribe. This morpheme means “write”, and students have been exploring words containing it, including describe, transcribe, subscription, and transcript.
Sentence Level Writing
Following their work on relative clauses, students are now piecing together various sentence elements, including appositives, conjunctions, and relative clauses. The aim is to improve the quality of their writing by enhancing simple sentences, capturing details in a more fluent and concise way.
Preview for Learning
Students have just commenced a Knowledge Rich unit on Natural Disasters. They are learning a great deal about the natural world, particularly in Australia, and are using this information to drive both sentence-level and whole-text writing.
➗ Maths
We have recently commenced learning across multiple areas of Mathematics. The study of decimals complements the work we previously completed on fractions, and students have recognised links across other areas of mathematical learning.
We have also been completing a unit on angles, including the practical use of a protractor. This knowledge has then been applied in our unit on shape, particularly as students explore the transformation of shapes such as rotation, translation, reflection, and enlargement.

Alongside reviewing the term’s learning, the next couple of weeks will include further exploration of angles and shape, as well as an introduction to chance.
School Production: Moana JR
What a tremendous few days we experienced at Rowville Secondary College during Moana JR! While the whole-school production was outstanding, we are especially proud of the Grade 5 cohort. Each class performed extremely well, taking pride in their presentation, effort, and performance. Thank you to everyone who supported the students in preparing and participating. We hope you enjoyed the show!
Several Grade 5 students also took on extra roles in the production. Their performances were impressive, the result of many rehearsal sessions and committed hard work. One standout performance was Gramma Tala, played by Abbey in 5M. Here is her reflection:
"When I went on the bus I started to feel scared. It didn’t feel like the real thing—I was just nervous. And when the curtains opened, it felt worse. The first line came, and all the ancestors walked on in the beginning. I hid behind the side of the curtain and then came my first line: ‘I know why the coconuts are black.’ Shockingly, I didn’t have to talk loud—the mic worked. I remember getting miked up; it really hurt. But the show went really well. The cast and I would like to thank Mrs Higgins for leading us, and everyone who came and supported our school."

Updates from around the school
Garden Working Bee – Friday 12th September
We are calling on our wonderful school community to help us freshen up the gardens at the front of the school. On Friday 12th September, from 11.30am to 3.30pm, we will be holding a garden maintenance afternoon and would love your support.
The work will include:
- Removing old plants
- Weeding garden beds
- Planting new plants to brighten up the entrance to our school
If you can spare some time, whether it’s for the whole afternoon or just an hour, your help will make a big difference. Please bring along gardening gloves, tools if you have them, and plenty of energy!
To assist with planning, we kindly ask that you confirm your attendance by emailing the school office at lysterfield.ps@education.vic.gov.au.
Together, we can make the front of our school a welcoming and beautiful space for our students, families, and community.
Green Team News
The Green Team has raised over $80 thanks to students putting their juice, milk and water containers into the 10 cent collection tubs, instead of landfill bins. That's a lot of money but more importantly that's a lot of rubbish kept out of landfill.
