📖 Literacy
In Word Work, we have been busy building our reading and writing skills. Students have been practising reading and encoding words using all our alphabet sounds, as well as digraphs such as sh, ch, th, ck, qu, ng, wh, ph, ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, and oe.
In our Knowledge Rich lessons, we have been learning about the seasons. Our focus has been on understanding the seasonal cycle and the environmental changes that occur throughout the year. Students have enjoyed showing off their learning by recording their knowledge in their books and designing a seasonal setting and outfit.
In sentence-level writing, we have been exploring different types of sentences. Through explicit instruction, students are learning how to identify and construct both statements and questions.
Preview – Prep students will explore the fictional text A Year and connect their understanding from the Knowledge Rich Seasons unit to the story. We will continue to work on our reading goals, Word Work, and our ability to construct statements and questions.
➗ Maths
This fortnight, we have been learning about sharing evenly between two and three groups, and discovering what happens when there is a remainder. Students have used concrete materials and problem cards to practise sharing evenly.
Preview – Next fortnight, we will be learning to subitise, identifying the size of groups in a collection.
Wellbeing
In our Wellbeing sessions, Prep students have been learning about what it means to be kind and brave. We have talked about kindness by looking at the ways we can use kind words, helping hands, and friendly actions to make others feel happy and included. The children have shared their own ideas about times when they showed kindness, such as helping a friend, saying something nice, or inviting someone to play. They are learning that being kind means making choices that help others feel safe, cared for, and respected.
Preview – Over the next fortnight, students will explore their personal strengths, such as being kind, brave, generous, or funny. As part of this learning, they will design and create their very own superhero cape to showcase and celebrate the unique strengths that make them who they are.
Production - Moana
The students have had a ball this week performing in our whole-school production of Moana. They did an amazing job pushing through changes in routine, structure, and tiredness in preparation for the big show. Students danced and sang their hearts out, and they looked incredible. We are all so proud of them! Look below for some photos.
Father's Day Morning
The students had a wonderful time with their dads or special person on Friday morning last week. With a range of activities on offer, they spent the morning creating, building, and drawing with their special person. Here are some photos of the morning below.

Updates from around the school
Garden Working Bee – Friday 12th September
We are calling on our wonderful school community to help us freshen up the gardens at the front of the school. On Friday 12th September, from 11.30am to 3.30pm, we will be holding a garden maintenance afternoon and would love your support.
The work will include:
- Removing old plants
- Weeding garden beds
- Planting new greenery to brighten the entrance to our school
If you can spare some time, whether it’s for the whole afternoon or just an hour, your help will make a big difference. Please bring along gardening gloves, tools (if you have them), and plenty of energy!
To assist with planning, we kindly ask that you confirm your attendance by emailing the school office at lysterfield.ps@education.vic.gov.au.
Together, we can make the front of our school a welcoming and beautiful space for our students, families, and community.
Green Team Newsletter #2
The enthusiastic Green Team members from Years 3 to 6 continue to meet with Mrs Alexander and Mrs Stokol each Wednesday lunchtime. Meetings begin with a check-in on how the yard-cleaning roster is going. Students report on which areas are the cleanest, which need more attention, and share ideas for improvement.
Sustainability remains a key focus. Whether it’s managing waste, maintaining garden spaces, or spreading awareness, students have shown impressive initiative and creativity.
Our 10c container collection is going strong! We’ve raised over $30 in just a few weeks. Green Team members manage the collection bin outside the canteen on lunch-order days, and also visit classrooms weekly to gather containers from specially labelled tubs. By collecting these items daily, we are preventing waste from going to landfill and turning it into funds to support our environmental efforts.
Be sure to check out the Sustainability Display in the gym over the coming weeks to see what we’ve been up to!
Did you know? You can support the Green Team by nominating Lysterfield Primary School (LPS) as your donation partner through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme.

It’s planting season, and what’s better than free plants?
Help the Green Team — and Earn Free Plants!
Did you know that the Knox Environment Society (KES) offers free native plants as prizes through their Nature Discovery Passport program?
By playing an interactive game and collecting stamps at local reserves, participants can earn plant prizes, and what better way to use those plants than by donating them to our school for the Green Team to grow and maintain?
Explore one of the many beautiful reserves in Knox on the weekend, learn about your local ecology, collect stamps, and claim your prize. It’s a fun way to get outside, support the environment, and contribute to our school’s sustainability efforts.
And who says the fun is just for the kids? Families are welcome to join in too!
