Win At The Fair!

On Saturday, like many in the BNW community, my daughter and I enjoyed the wonder that is the Spring Magic Market! We saw some familiar faces from past and present and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Market. The Spring Magic Market always reminds me of one of my favourite maths games that I used to love playing in the classroom. It may seem simple, but it covers lots of different concepts from money to counting to data and probability. That game is WIN AT THE FAIR!

You will need:

  •  A gameboard Win at the Fair.pdf
  • A dice - either a 12 sided dice or two 6 sided dice (there is a number you’ll never roll if you use a two 6 sided dice, I wonder if you know which number that is?)
  •  A counter or something to move along the board
  • Coins (if you have them!) or you could make them out of paper
  • A piece of paper to tally your winnings
  • A partner (you can play this with as many or as few people as you like)
  • Different coloured pencils to tally your winnings

How to play :

I’ve made a video on how to play (apologise in advance for my camera work!) The best thing about this game is that you can take it in lots of different directions from identifying coins, to counting coins, to finding the total winnings, to thinking about the probability of a coin winning more than another, to graphing data and even different ways we graph data!

Questions to get you thinking:

What amount did you win the most?

What amount has been won the most by everyone playing?

Which amount is won the least? Why do you think that is?

If you had ten goes in a row, what amount do you think you would land on the most?

Can you graph your data to show what amount has won the most?

Could you change the board so that the results are more even?

Happy holidays and I hope you have as much fun playing Win At The Fair as I did!
