NBA Maths Hoops

Our Year 6 students have been using NBA Math Hoops as part of their mathematics learning program. NBA Math Hoops is an in-person board game and curriculum that engages students in fundamental mathematics through the game of basketball. Yesterday, the North Melbourne Football Club hosted the inaugural NBA Maths Hoops Victorian Championship. It was a great success with giveaways, sport star appearances, and student prizes!  Our teams competed against other schools across Melbourne, with more than 100 students participating! A special mention needs to go to Caitlin and Alice  who won the tournament. We look forward to implementing this program in our other year levels next term.

Student Reflection

On the 17th of August the Year Sixes participated in The NBA Math Hoops Tournament at the North Melbourne Football Club. We versed other students from all over Melbourne and in total, 40 teams competed.

At stages in the competition we felt quite doubtful due to the skill level of the other schools, but decided we would push through, try our hardest and never give up. Our positive mindset and our supportive friends let us keep going through the harder parts of the competition. All of the other schools were very smart and tactical and we think everyone deserved that trophy.

It was a great day as we were provided some very delicious sandwiches and were able to catch up with our friends at the break times. At the start we were able to draft our NBA players for the day and we got free stickers and a t-shirt.

A big congratulations to everyone who participated at St Mary’s but also a huge shout out to Liam H, Liam M, Giselle C and Tara S who were able to make it into the quarter finals.

We would would also like to thank all of the people running the event. A mega thank you to Mr Reid, Ms Lemons, Ms Michelle and Olivia Templeton for taking us.
