MENTAL STRATEGIES – TERM 3 WEEK 9 & 10

This week and next week children are focusing on the following mental strategies at school. Keep up the great practice that is happening at home.

YEAR LEVEL STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME
Foundation

Forward and backward number word sequence by ones within the range 30 – 0

-Start at 0 and count forwards by 1’s to 30

-Start at 30 and count backwards by 1 to 0

-Can you start at any number between 0-30 and count forwards or backwards by 1’s

Year 1

Quotition division – with materials.

Quotition division' requires students to find the total number of groups. In a quotition division, the total number of items are given, along with the number of items per group. The answer is the number of groups.

You can practice this strategy by looking at the number of items you have and then organsing them in groups of 5 or 3 or 6 etc (that is five items in each group) and then counting how many groups you have made.

Year 2

Continue to review: Fact families up to 20

Explore the related addition and subtraction facts made from the same numbers in the range 0-20. Fore example: for the numbers 7, 8, and 15, the addition/subtraction fact family consists of 7 + 8 = 15, 8 + 7 = 15, 15 - 8 = 7, 15 - 7 = 8.

Year 3

Counting Forwards and Backwards by ones to 10,000 and beyond from any number

Can you start at any number between 0-10,000 and count forwards or backwards by 1’s

Year 4 & 5

Halving and Repeated Halving-Division

Students use the halving strategy in division to solve a problem. Halving is a strategy that can be uses to divide numbers by 2. Repeated Halving can be used to divide numbers by four and 8.

Year 6

Distributive property – Division without materials

We can divide larger numbers using the distributive property by breaking those numbers into smaller factors.

E.g. 72 divided by 3 can be broken up into 60 divided by 3 + 12 divided by 3 – which gives you 20 + 4 and therefore the answer is 24.

The number 72 is broken up into more manageable parts, being 60 and 12 which can be divided by 3.

ANDI’S CROSS COUNTRY JOURNEY

Andi’s cross country journey has been published in this week’s Dandenong Journal. I have attached it below for you to read.

SWIMMING

Thank you to all the parents for completing the swimming Operoo form and to the parents of the Juniors, Grade3 and any new senior students for completing the swimming ability forms. For Grade 4-6 students, the pool will use their groupings from last year initially but all students will be reassessed in their first swimming lesson.

Parent who have volunteered to assist the juniors, I will be checking that your Working with Children is registered with the school office and will be in contact with you prior to swimming beginning.

Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the Operoo permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home as swimming days change for the different Learning Spaces. Timetables are now in PDF format and can be downloaded on mobile phones.

Swimming is usually:

Mondays LS1 Seniors, LS1 Juniors, LS2 Juniors

Tuesdays LS3 Juniors, LS2 Seniors, LS3 Seniors

However there are a few days due to Production Practises where groups have been swapped around and there are also a couple of Wednesdays and Thursdays where we attend swimming.

FOOTY FUN DAY

As is the tradition, Footy Fun Day will be held on the last day of term. We encourage students and staff to come dressed in their footy clothes or footy team colours. P & F will be organising a footy hotdog lunch, further information will be provided shortly. Wednesday I met with the Grade 6 students interested in assisting the Juniors with their footy rotations. I was amazed at the number of volunteers I had! Very impressive!

Parents we ask you to please acknowledge the Operoo form posted for Footy Fun Day. An approximate timetable for the day can also be found on the Operoo note.
