Unit 2 VCE Art: Making & Exhibiting Excursion

Last Friday the Unit 2 Art class travelled to Melbourne to view the Melbourne Now exhibition, which was in its final days at NGV Australia, Federation Square. Melbourne Now was an exhibit of local contemporary artists working within an expansive range of disciplines including fashion, jewellery, painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, film, virtual reality, photography, printmaking & product design. The students were challenged by some of the art on display, but equally impressed by the diversity. They will now use their experience to develop their own thematic exhibition.

A highlight of the day was participating in Shaun Gladwell’s ‘Passing Electrical Storms’ which was a deeply affecting ‘out of body’ participatory extended reality (XR) experience. After being led into the installation space & hooked up to heart monitors, our experience was almost meditative, but a little unsettling, as we were guided through a simulated de-escalation of life through XR & medical technologies. It was a very unique experience & showcased the changing nature of contemporary art!
