As a child, I never felt a strong fascination with space. Science fiction didn't captivate me like it did others. However, there was one extraordinary event that left a lasting impression on me. In 1986, while camping with my family, Halley's Comet graced the night sky, embellishing it with stars, planets and the awe-inspiring comet itself. It was during that moment that I realised the indescribable magnificence of our Lord Jesus. Since then, as an adult, each time I gaze upon a clear night sky, my appreciation for the universe and God's creation grows. The moon, with its radiant glow, is a particular beauty, especially during weeks when it shines in its full splendour. To think that humans dared to venture out, to reach and walk on such a distant celestial body, is truly remarkable. It demonstrates immense faith and unwavering commitment to explore beyond our earthly confines.
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.
Exodus 14:21-22
Recently, I immersed myself in the book of Exodus, particularly chapters 13 to 15, which recount the extraordinary event of the Crossing of the Red Sea. God, through His immense power, saved the Israelites from the pursuing Egyptians, defying all human odds. This story reveals that God not only delivers and provides for His people but also shields them from harm. His dominion extends over nature, enabling Him to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. It is a testament to God's providence and His unwavering guidance in fulfilling His plans. Sometimes we may perceive biblical stories as distant echoes of the past, wondering if they hold any relevance in our lives today. Yet, as I reflect upon the moments when our Lord has provided for my family, myself and even our school at DCS, I am reminded of the times when daunting obstacles stood in our way and it was our fear that needed conquering. Faith lies in believing that our God can accomplish what mankind deems impossible. As I delve into the Scriptures and contemplate how each narrative points toward the coming of Jesus, I am reassured that our God remains the same—yesterday, today and forever. Thus, when we find ourselves in seemingly hopeless situations, when obstacles loom large, we must not lose heart. We ought to remember that God operates uniquely in every circumstance, but He is always the Lord and our provider.
In Judges 6-8, the account of Gideon vividly illustrates this truth. In the book of Judges, we witness how God works through Gideon to accomplish His plans. The victory belongs to God, not humanity. As you embark on this week, my prayer is that you will remember God's abiding presence with those who trust Him. If we firmly believe that God can employ us for His work, regardless of our social status, personal abilities, or even our limited numbers, imagine the incredible things He can accomplish through us. When we exhibit faithfulness and responsibility in the small tasks entrusted to us, God may call us to undertake even greater endeavours if it aligns with His will. We should anticipate that when God employs us in His work, He might prompt us to step out of our comfort zones.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise—
in God, I trust and am not afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalm 56:3-4
Let us conclude with a brief prayer:
Father, help me to live this day to the fullest, remaining steadfast in my devotion to You in every aspect of my life. Jesus, empower me to selflessly serve others, displaying kindness to everyone I encounter. Spirit, ignite in me a love for the lost, enabling me to proclaim Christ through my actions and words. Amen.
...Your word (the Bible) is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
Psalm 119:105
