Indonesian: Bu Steeds and Bu Glenda
It was a beautiful sunny day at Mitcham Primary School to celebrate Indonesian Day
The students were enthusiastic to participate in many fun Indonesian games, e.g balloon race, mask making, egg and spoon race, sack race, pen in a bottle squat, and Indonesian dessert making (klepon). It was a fantastic experience for all the students and something they will remember for many years to come! Terima kasih (Thank you) to our dedicated teachers, administration, aides, and volunteers (Bu Fanny and Bu Lina) for supporting this event to run so smoothly across the school. Many thanks to our parent community for helping to find red and white or Indonesian clothing for their child to wear. Some 56 students made Klepon (similar to mochi with pandan and palm sugar filling) on Indonesian day. They loved the experience and enjoyed making them in the Makerspace.
Performing Arts: Miss K
Coming up in Term 4 for Performing Arts is dance and a little music! All of the students from Prep – Grade 4 will be exploring movement and how they can make creative choices when creating dances. Students will also be learning about the importance of cultural dance and the reasons why different people dance. Prep students will be learning the Greek dance ‘The Zorba’, 1/2 and Cycle 2 Students will be learning the French folk dance ‘The Bear Dance’, as well as ‘The Zorba’, and 3/4 students will be learning the Australian folk dance ‘Syncopated Cyril’ as well as ‘The Bear Dance’ and ‘The Zorba’. The 5/6 and Cycle 3 students will be doing music this term. We will be revisiting our music theory and performance skills, turning each class into a class band. We will be rehearsing and learning songs such as ‘One More Time’, ‘Shake It Off’, and ‘Seven Nation Army’. This term, the MPS Band and the String Orchestra will continue in full swing, with many exciting performances. To top it off, I am running Senior Choir and Mitcham Music Makers again this term, which I’m very excited about!! A very fun way to end the school year in Performing Arts.

STEM: Mrs Lamont and Mrs Cain
This term in STEM the big idea is ‘Living Earth’. Over their investigations students will be deepening their understanding of biological sciences and earth and space sciences. The grade 5 and 6 students will be working with a scientist to cultivate the perfect conditions to grow germs, justify (and or create) survival on planets other than earth, explore biomes and (hopefully) fix our gifted tech! The grade 3 and 4 students will be exploring and experimenting with weathering and changes over time, looking into sundials and tracking duration, exploring earth connections using MakeyMakey. They will have the opportunity to work with a scientist to explore onions under a microscope and look into living things. The grade 1 and 2 students will be looking into life cycles and bugs. They will be following the life cycle of a plant and learning about their features, parts and optimal conditions. We will be finishing the term by making rain gauges and looking into resource conservation. The foundation students are investigating Living Things, looking at life-cycles and what things need to grow. We have had a visit from the “Lizard Wizard” and learnt about many different types of reptiles, insects and amphibians.
