Wellbeing Story Time

By Ryo Sugihara

Picture story books often open up conversations and learning opportunities for what might be complex and hard-to-tackle concepts for children. This is true for conversations about mental health issues, which can at times feel awkward or be challenging to discuss. In this series, I will be introducing you to picture story books which will not only entertain but introduce children to a range of mental health issues which they or someone they know might experience.

Willow Takes on the Weather

Willow has a plan on this beautiful day! She is ready to go outside and play her heart out! But what’s this… a sudden change in weather? What do you do when things outside of your control throw your plans out the window? Do you try and resist and fight back? Or perhaps… there’s a better way to deal with such a situation. Let’s learn from Willow, how we can be willing to accept what we can’t control and make the most out of a situation that can’t be changed.

Willow Takes on the Weather

After listening to the story, you could…

  • Create a list of activities you can do when the weather isn’t all that great outside – are there any indoor games and creative activities you could engage in?
  • Create a T-Chart showing comparing the things we can and can’t control. It might look something like this:
I can control…I can’t control…
What I choose to say. What my friend wants to say.
  • Recall a time when things did not go according to your plan. How did it feel? What did you do about it? What could you do next time?
