From the Year 1 Classroom

Welcome back to Term 4! It was wonderful seeing so many smiling faces on Monday morning, and hearing about the wonderful things that the children experienced over the holidays! We are very excited to be taking the children to the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on Friday, to join the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in an exploration of Brahms’ First Symphony and the Overture to Glinka's opera, Ruslan and Lyudmila. In this interactive concert led by conductor Leonard Weiss and presenter Amberley Bremner, students will explore these thrilling works through active participation and listening, whilst discovering the sights and sounds of the Orchestra.
Please don’t forget that the children need to wear their hats in Term 4.
We’d like to welcome Miss Sinclair who is completing her final teaching placement in 1H for Term 4.
Literacy
This week we have been enjoying reading Dingo by Clare Saxby, which has been inspiring our own writing tasks. The children have searched for interesting adjectives that the author used to describe Dingo. They then used these adjectives to write many fascinating facts about Dingoes. This has set them up to begin to write their own information reports on Dingoes and other Australian animals later in the week.
This text has helped us to explore our new vocabulary words- active, protect and determined.
During Initial Lit lessons we have been learning to read and write words with the ‘dge’ trigraph at the end of words. The children are learning that ‘dge’ is used to make the ‘j’ sound at the end of words, when they follow after a short vowel sound like bridge, fudge, edge and hedge. As you read at home this week, try to be a word detective and find some more ‘dge’ words.
This week we have reviewed our Tricky Words from last term- always, animal and open, and introduced our 3 new words- other, another and water.
Please continue to encourage your child to read aloud each night for 10-15 minutes and sign their new Term 4 Reader Diary. Please send this in each Friday. Don’t forget our InitiaLit Decodable Readers are all available online to access! Please contact your child’s teacher if you have lost the scanning barcode to access these. This was stuck to the front of the Term 3 Reading Diary.
Maths
This week we will be learning about how data can be collected and shown in different ways, such as in graphs, charts, or tables. We will be presenting data in these ways helps us see patterns and understand information more clearly.
Inquiry
In this Year 1 unit, Same but Different: Family Life, students explore the diversity of families, emphasising how love and care connect family members. Students will recognise different family structures, compare past and present family dynamics, and examine how roles and relationships have evolved. They will explore the roles that family members play and how each person contributes to daily life and supports one another. Through interviews, timelines and storytelling, students will develop historical understanding, sequencing skills and an appreciation for their own family history.
Religion
As we start Term 4, our new Religion Unit is ‘Our Call to Mission’. In this unit students will develop an understanding of mission – being like Jesus through caring and loving those in need. We will look at different examples of how we care for others and identify ways we can participate in Jesus’ mission by sharing in a loving way with those in need.
Home Learning
We have been really pleased with the number of students who have been practising their Tricky Words at home. Here is a simple and fun game you can play at home: Set a timer and see how long it takes you to read all your tricky words. Try and beat your time the next day. If you can read them, try spelling them instead!
