From the Year 4 Classroom

Welcome to Term 4!!
We hope the students have had a fabulous 2-week holiday and are excited to return for the final term of the year.
In Reading, we have started exploring our next class novel: His Name Was Walter, written by acclaimed Australian author Emily Rodda. Students are already hooked by the suspenseful plot and are curious to know what happens next in this mystery-fantasy novel. While reading this novel, we’ll be using key reading comprehension strategies such as visualising, predicting, connecting, summarising, inferring and analysing character development. The novel is about a group of school children and their teacher who get stranded during a storm and take shelter in an old, abandoned house. While there, they discover a mysterious handwritten book titled His Name Was Walter. As they begin to read it aloud, the story inside the book—about a boy named Walter, a mysterious girl named Sparrow, and themes of love, loss, courage, and belonging—starts to feel strangely connected to the history of the house itself. The tale within the tale slowly reveals secrets about the house, its former occupants, and even the people who are reading it. It blends fairy-tale elements with mystery, weaving together the past and the present. At its heart, the book explores: Identity and belonging – Walter’s journey to find where he belongs. Courage and resilience – standing strong despite hardship. Mystery and history – uncovering hidden truths that connect people across time.
In Writing, we begin this week by exploring the purpose, structure and language features of an orientation (beginning) for a narrative text. The students will plan and write an orientation that includes a description of the characters and a setting.
In Mathematics, we begin Term 4 learning about the topic, Data. This week students will pose relevant questions for data collection, use spreadsheets to record collected data, create and interpret pictographs, and create column graphs with non-unit scales.
In Inquiry, we have commenced our Geography unit titled, Diversity of Places and Environments. Students eagerly participated in a Geography Hunt taking photos of examples of places, spaces and environments they noticed in around our school.
In Religion, we have begun our next unit, Reaching Out and Serving Others. Students watched a short video called, Kindness Boomerang, which illustrated how simple acts of kindness can create a ripple effect. They identified how the people in the video reached out to others and how they served others.
Woods Point Visit – In the last week of Term 3, some students from 4S and 4M took a very special trip to visit residents at Woods Point and what a heartwarming experience it was!
The students spent time completing activities, such as wordsearches; chatting and sharing stories with the elderly residents. The residents lit up with laughter and joy, happy to have the students bring energy and conversation into their day. It was clear from the excitement of the students upon returning to school that the sense of joy was mutual. The Year Four teachers are so proud of how respectful and caring the students have been to the elderly during our visits to Woods Point, while representing our school.
Year Four Talent Show – The Year Four space was filled with excitement, laughter and a whole lot of talent as students took to the stage for our Year 4 Talent Show. Each performance brought something unique to the show. There were many enthusiastic students performing funny acts, dancing, telling jokes, miming and students showcasing their special talents. A special thank you to Billie, Annabelle, Indi, Summer, Milla, Lexi and Maeve for hosting and organising the Talent Show. Your hard work, enthusiasm, and attention to detail did not go unnoticed. The event was a great success thanks to your dedication and teamwork – well done!
