Congratulations to Young House students, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Callinan on a wonderful House Service on Monday. Young House’s theme of Resilience was very well presented, with relevant prayers, songs, readings and stories. Reverend Carlynne Nunn from the Warrnambool Uniting Church addressed the audience on friendship and resilience.
On Friday, Young House will conduct a ‘Bake Sale’ at recess, raising funds for ‘Red Dust’ a charity group whose focus is improving the lives of indigenous youth and families. Students are encouraged to come to school in red and green, with a gold coin donation.
We were privileged to welcome members of Orchestra Victoria to the Junior School on Tuesday for a strings workshop with our Pizzicato Strings players. It was a wonderful opportunity for our young musicians to get to play with and learn from seasoned professionals.
Each year the Junior School puts forward students in Years 2-6 to sit the ICAS Competition Papers in Mathematics, English and Spelling. These students are selected using standardised and classroom teacher assessments. ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) is an academic competition that challenges students and recognises their achievements in core subjects such as English and Mathematics. The competition was started over 40 years ago and has since become an internationally recognised annual event, completed across 41 countries.
The questions are engaging, fun, and written in a way that is entirely different to regular school assessments, aiming to test students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving abilities.
This year, we are offering all Year 2-6 students the opportunity to complete the three ICAS papers, if parents would like them to. The cost to sit each online assessment is $20.95. Please contact Mrs. Povey at the Junior School reception and indicate which ICAS assessment(s) you would like your child to sit.
Parents will be emailed further information about this shortlyeek. Students will sit the online papers in Term Three, from August 13 to August 27.
