LS2 Junior Students Become Information Report Experts!

We are excited to share what’s been happening in Learning Space 2’s Writing this term!

From Week 7 to Week 11 our Junior students have been diving into the world of Information Reports during Writing.

Across all year levels, students have been learning how to organise their ideas, use factual language, and write with a clear purpose about a specific topic.

Our Prep students have been busy exploring facts about their families. They’ve been writing about who is in their family, where their families live, and what they like to do together. It has been wonderful to see our youngest learners developing confidence in sharing real-life experiences through their writing.

Meanwhile, our Grade 1 and 2 students have been linking their writing to our Inquiry topic on how things have changed over time.

They’ve been working hard on writing information reports that compare the past and the present. Topics have included transport, community helpers, telephones, and school. Through these topics, students have been building their understanding of history while developing strong writing skills.

This learning will come to life in Weeks 10 and 11, when our Grade 1 and 2 students will present their Oral Presentations which has the same focus of comparing something from the past to now. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to practice speaking clearly, sharing their knowledge with confidence, and celebrating what they’ve learned with their peers.

We’re so proud of the progress all our LS2 students are making as writers and thinkers!

Community Change Makers Action Team

This week the Community Change Makers Action Team went to visit the 3 and 4 year old kinder children at Pelican Childcare Lynbrook.

After composing emails in partners to some local community groups to see if we could help make change or learn more about those organizations in our community, we were able to create a partnership with Pelican Childcare. The children were able to read together, build connections through play and taught them about our PBL values.

The children created plans of what they would do with the kinder children while there and enjoyed following these on the day. Everyone had a lot of fun, making new friends and having fun. We look forward to continuing this partnership throughout the year.

Community Garden in Action

The garden grubs, the Action Teams and each Learning Space has been hard at work in the community garden this term; planting and harvesting.

We've harvested 7 kilos! of raw black olives

Apparently they're pretty easy to "brine" (1 part salt to 10 parts of water, in a glass jar in a cool, dark place, and left for a couple of months).

These are currently for sale ($5 per 500g bag) in the Staff Room.

The students also picked lemons (please feel free to make a selection if you'd like to buy those, as they're not huge)

The Environmental Action Team will also be excited to sell these items from the Garden on Monday 23rd June, at 2:45 pm.

Proceeds are reinvested straight into the garden.

We're also in need of people who are willing to look after the chickens during the school holidays.

Courtney will not be available to help after Term 4, when Zoe graduates!

If anyone has handy skills, some of the garden beds are beginning to fall apart (the sleepers have moved) and the nets protecting the new plants from the chickens will not be sufficient for long, so another solution is needed.

Please contact me if someone would like to assist with this! - Ashleigh - LS3 Teacher aolive@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au

Grade 5/6 Global Justice Action Team

This year Year our Global Justice Team has decided to explore different Fundraising activities to raise enough money to contribute towards the Victorian Dog Rescue. This non profit organisation has been proactive in saving animals in pounds and shelters since 2006.

We ask that students come together to support this very important cause, after all these are God’s Creations and we can all do our bit to support this Organization. There will be lunchtime stalls coming up. The first two stalls will be selling small seeds and Slime.

Please bring along between  $2 - $5 and support this Action Group.

SENIOR SPORT

On Tuesday, June 17th, the Summer Lightning Premiership was held across various stadiums and ovals. This full-day event was organised in a round-robin format to ascertain which teams would progress to the Divisional Competition.

Netball and Volleystars faced off at Casey Indoor Stadium. Both teams demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship towards each other and their rivals.

We express our gratitude to Amy and Claire, and Claire who stepped in on the day of the Lightning Prem. Melody consistently conducted practices with both of her Volleystars teams, and her dedication and commitment are truly admirable. She noted that they exhibited improvement, which is the intended goal. Melody had the pleasure of having Grade 4 students assist in competing against other schools. What a remarkable opportunity they experienced!!

We thank Priscilla (Zara's mum), a parent from the SFS community, for her assistance to Melody on that day.

Furthermore, we appreciate Louise (Ivy’s mum) for her support to Claire in Netball. The activities unfolded seamlessly due to the collaboration and support of our SFS Community.

Both of our Netball teams achieved third place. Congratulations!!

This semester, our AFL 9’s was conducted in a slightly different manner; there was no tackling, and it was played in a tag format. The participants competed fairly and thoroughly enjoyed themselves on that day.

We extend our gratitude to Kevin, our teacher, as well as to our wonderful parents, Courtney (Zoe’s mum) and Emily (Claudia’s mum), for their assistance on that day.

Our Soccer teams played at Livingston Reserve. The girls' team competed with only 7 players and the other schools had 9 players on the field throughout the entire day. Their resilience and unwavering determination deserve commendation; well done, girls. They finished fourth overall, competing against a total of 8 teams in the tournament. We also thank Ganga (Moneesha’s mum) for her invaluable support with the girls' team.

The T-Ball team exhibited a commendable never-give-up attitude, which should be recognized and appreciated. Congratulations to the T-Ball A team for securing 2nd place overall, and special thanks to Sarah, Ashleigh and Amanda for stepping in on that day.

I express my gratitude to all the staff at St. Francis for their ongoing support of the Inter-school Sport program; it is greatly appreciated.

ST JOHN AMBULANCE FIRST AID IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM

The First Aid in Schools Program run by St John’s Ambulance has been organised for all students Prep – Grade 6 this Monday June 23rd.

“The St John First Aid in Schools Program is designed to educate children on how to assist in emergencies, whether at home, at school, or on the sports field. St John Ambulance Australia is committed to promoting the importance of first aid in the community and believes that there is no better place to start than in our schools. Every child in Australia should have access to vital first aid knowledge and with the First Aid in Schools program this is possible. The First Aid Schools Program is a FREE program run by St John Ambulance Australia providing basic first aid training to school students across all states and territories in Australia.”

Students will learn various skills at each level based on the DRSABCD (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation) Action Plan for First Aid.

We ask parents to please approve via Operoo and ensure your child is wearing their sports uniform on the day. Reminders will be placed in Morning Gathering as well as the newsletter.

SOCCER FUN DAY

On the last day of term students will be involved in the Soccer Fun Day. Seniors will participate in House soccer matches and Juniors in soccer rotational activities. We will hopefully have our traditional Staff/Parents vs Gr 6 soccer match as well. If you would like to join the team please let me know.

We ask students to wear their sports uniform with their soccer top or they can wear their soccer team’s colours. Parents please acknowledge the soccer fun day activities via Operoo.

SFS AFTER SCHOOL AUSKICK TERM 3

I am very excited to announce that SFS will be having their own Auskick Program running on our oval next term beginning in Week 5 on Wednesday August 20th from 3.20 pm – 4.20 pm.  Tyler is happy to run a separate group for the girls if we have enough enrolments.

There will be 5 sessions and the cost will be $55. Like last year students who enrol will also receive a pack sent to their home.

If you would like your child to attend, please use the QR Code on the flyer to register your child.

I will also send information via Operoo but remember confirming Operoo does not register your child. You need to register your child with AFL for them to be involved.

Any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me.
