Prep Community News

Dear Prep Families,
We are excited to share the fantastic learning experiences happening in our prep classrooms for Weeks 9 and 10. This term has flown by, and we cannot believe the amazing growth we continue to see each day with our prep students!
English:
Our InitiaLit program has continued to introduce new sounds and letters. We have recently introduced the letter ‘k’ and will learn the letter ‘u’ this week. We will also be introducing the letters ‘b’ and ‘j’ next week. You can help to support your child at home by asking them to share the sound that k and u make. You can ask them, what sound does ‘kitten’ and ‘umbrella’ start with. Here are the visual prompts for our new letters:
At home, if you wish to practise the sounds letters make with your child, click here.
We have continued to incorporate daily reading and writing activities into our lessons. We provide opportunities to practise reading CVC words and building CVC words using the sounds they have learnt. Please see a list of examples below:
We have continued to learn more tricky words. These are words that cannot be sounded out using the sounds we have learnt. Below are the tricky words we have recently introduced and words we are learning this week. You can help support your child’s learning by asking them what each word is and if they can say a sentence using that word.

In week 8, we read the story ‘There’s a Bear on my Chair’. The three words we focused on from the story were ‘nasty’, ‘rare’, and ‘despair’.
In week 9, we read the story ‘My Two Blankets’. The three words that we focused on from the story were ‘strange’, whispered’, and ‘lonely’.
In weeks 10 and 11, we will read the stories ‘Magic Beach’ and ‘Wombat Stew’. The three words that we will focus on from Magic Beach are ‘glee’, plunging’ and ‘dazzled’ and the three words from Wombat Stew that students will explore are ‘sighed’, boasted’ and ‘grateful’.
You can continue to support your child’s vocabulary development by using these words in sentences at home. Some other activities may include playing charades with these words and finding them in picture books.
Maths:
In Maths, we have continued to explore measurement through length and capacity. Students have had the opportunity to measure the length of classroom objects using informal units to determine which object is longer or shorter. They have also used informal units to compare the capacity of different containers, determining which container holds more or less.
Our students have just begun exploring bundling sticks. Students have been practising making a bundle of ten, this is when 10 ones make 1 ten.
By bundling sticks, our students will be able to practise counting by 10s, to find the total collection.
You can continue to support your child at home by counting toys or items around the house. This can include counting forwards and backwards.
History:
In Week 9, we had our Prep Open Afternoon, where families were invited to join their child and participate in a history lesson. Our students have been learning about their family and culture, and to celebrate their history unit, our students made family trees.
Reminders/Upcoming events:
Take Home Reading:
At Tarneit Rise, we encourage reading each night. Each child has an assigned day to change their reading books. Please bring their reading satchel on this day so classroom teachers can check reading journals and assist your child in getting new books.
Prep Flying Bookworm Incursion:
In Week 11, the Preps will have their Flying Bookworm Incursion. This incursion will be a great way for students to celebrate the end of semester one, through three interactive performances.
- School finishes at 2:30pm on Friday 4th July. Term 3 will recommence on Monday 21st July.
- Parent teacher interviews Thursday 24th July
- Pupil Free Day - term 3, Monday 28th July
Warmest Wishes,
