Grade 6 Community News

And just like that, it’s the end of week 10! We really cannot believe just how quickly this term is flying by.

Reading:

In Reading, we have started our Ancient Greece and Rome study, with some interesting topics about Ancient Greek City-States, Greek Myths – Orpheus and Eurydice, Athens, the Birthplace of Democracy, growing up in Athens and many other inspiring topics.  Please ask your child to share what they are learning with you.

Writing:

In Writing, our Year 6 students have been exploring historical narratives. They have studied the structure of this text type, identified key features, and defined what makes a narrative ‘historical’. Students have engaged in rich discussions about the elements that bring history to life through storytelling and have used note-taking strategies to gather and organise ideas for their writing.

This week, we are focusing on revising, editing, and publishing our final pieces. Students have put in tremendous effort to craft historical narratives from the perspective of either a Spartan or an Athenian. These pieces incorporate relevant historical facts and characters while showcasing original and creative storytelling. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and the thoughtful way they have brought Ancient Greece to life through their writing.

Maths:

It’s been a busy and exciting time in Grade 6, with students wrapping up our unit on Probability and beginning a new mathematical focus on Patterns and Algebra. Students are now learning to recognise, describe and create number patterns using repeated steps and geometric designs. They’re developing their algebraic thinking by beginning to generalise patterns using simple equations and design algorithms to generate number sets. It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity and problem-solving skills in action.

Vocabulary:

Our Vocabulary Words are taken from our Read 2 Learn lessons to expand the children’s knowledge of Ancient Greece as well as to provide them with useful words to use in their historical narratives.
