Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,
Welcome back to our learning journey. Can you believe that we are already in week 10 of term 2! This term has flown by so quickly.
Knowledge Building
We are now six weeks into our knowledge building unit on Inside Out and Back Again. Students have been working hard planning and writing a historical narrative. They have completed their resolution and conclusion to their historical narratives using checklists and planning templates for each stage. Students have been successful in using direct and indirect speech and sentence fragments looking at the subjects and predicates. They are now confidently using the apostrophes for singular and plural possession and contractions correctly. See below examples on how these language devices are used. Students will now move on to completing their own historical narrative on topics of their choice. Looking forward to seeing how these turn up.
Mathematics
In this four-lesson topic, students are building on features of two-dimensional shapes and symmetry. A key focus of this unit is transforming shapes by rotating, translating and reflecting them.
Key vocabulary
- anti-clockwise
- clockwise
- half turn
- horizontal
- quarter turn
- reflect
- rotate
- symmetrical
- transform
- translate
- vertical
Vocabulary
Over the past two weeks the students have been learning 6 new words each week from the text Inside Out and Back Again. Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They are then using these words in their writing and reading.
