Base 1270 Holiday Program

Once again, an action-packed program has been planned for vacation care at Base 1270 for the coming two-week break.  For details, see the dedicated Base 1270 page in this week’s newsletter.

Buddy Catch Ups

The buddy program is an important aspect of the transition process for our prep students each year.  But this is more than providing 1:1 support provided by the grade 6s on orientation day and then the first days and weeks of the new school year.

From time to time the grade 6 and prep teachers organise some informal catch ups, and we saw a good example of that last Friday, with the preps and 6s coming together to have lunch.

The preps loved it, as did the 6s.  It’s really nice to see the 6s pay close attention to their buddies.

Activities like this play an important role in creating a culture where the bigger kids nurture the younger kids, rather than seeing them as an annoyance.  Well done to the preps and 6s for taking the time to arrange these catch ups.

Adding Soft Fall to Playgrounds

As you would expect, we keep an eye on our adventure playgrounds, making sure they’re well maintained and safe for the kids.  One of the things we keep an eye on, is the amount of soft fall, especially in fall zones.

All of the playgrounds are requiring a bit of a top up at the moment, which is a great opportunity to put the kids to work.  On Friday I had a crack team of helpers who moved a four cubic metre pile of soft fall in 45 minutes and Mr Morgan had his kids on shovels doing the same at Scotsburn.

In the remaining weeks of term, we’ll top up the rest of our playgrounds.
