Twelve Strong: MacKillop's Mission Complete
Grand Final Hockey Report – MacKillop Catholic College vs Friends School (June 23)
Venue: Tasmanian Hockey Centre
Final Score: MacKillop Catholic College 5 – Friends 0
Grand Final Showdown – and a performance for the ages.
On Monday, twelve players from MacKillop Catholic College stepped onto the field for the grand final against a well-prepared Friends School side boasting a full bench and a dedicated goalkeeper. MacKillop had just two players on the bench and no goalkeeper, but what they lacked in numbers, they made up for in unity, resilience, and belief.
It wasn’t lost on anyone that there were twelve players representing MacKillop—a powerful parallel to the Twelve Apostles. Just as they were called to serve with courage and conviction, this MacKillop team stood together with purpose, heart, and faith in one another.
The match began with Isabella Patten opening the scoring with a composed finish after a team-led buildup. Minutes later, she struck again from the dot, sharp and determined. Her twin, Amielle, then added the third with her own confident finish from the same spot. We went into half-time 3–0 up, and the girls were absolutely buzzing.
The attacking momentum throughout the match was nothing short of relentless. Ayla Beaton, Summa Jacobson, and Poppy Talbot applied constant pressure, driving forward with intensity and never giving Friends a moment to rest. Their movement, energy, and willingness to contest every ball played a major role in MacKillop’s dominance in the circle.
Abby Sargent—calm under pressure—extended the lead with a perfectly placed shot from the top left of the arc, angled at 40 degrees. Then Alexis “One Game” Richards delivered a burst of brilliance, stealing the ball from the goalkeeper and blasting it into the bottom right corner, past two defenders.
Captain Abby reflected on the win simply: “We worked together as a team and had a high workrate.” That work ethic was evident in every moment.
Aili Thomas was heroic in defence, running down three consecutive penalty corners in the final minutes—a courageous effort that lifted the entire team. She was superbly supported by Simone Angel, Ruby Nikel, and Sara Paice, who together formed an impenetrable wall at the back. Their positioning, tackling, and calm decision-making under pressure were vital in keeping Friends scoreless.
For Poppy Talbot, the season has been transformational. “Learning what the game [hockey] is about” was her highlight—and it’s been a joy watching her grow each week.
With twelve players, no goalie, and every reason to feel underdog, MacKillop Catholic College stood tall and delivered a commanding 5–0 shutout in the grand final. A win built on trust, effort, and belief in something greater than individual skill—a true team victory.
