VHAP Master Class

Roslyn PATTI
Assistant Principal
On Thursday 19th June, Highvale students attended a full‑day Victorian High‑Ability Program (VHAP) Masterclass at Brentwood Secondary College, joining peers from nearby schools. The masterclass, offered as part of the term’s online VHAP course, provided a unique in-person opportunity to:
Connect with like‑minded, high‑ability students in the local area
Reflect on their term’s learning in English or Mathematics
Explore deeper ideas beyond the virtual classroom
Celebrate the knowledge and skills they have developed
These masterclasses are designed to consolidate online learning, foster peer connections, and enrich students’ educational experiences. Highvale’s participation in the event underscores the school’s commitment to providing advanced opportunities for our students.
Many thanks to Brentwood Secondary College for coordinating a thoughtful and inspiring day. We congratulate our students on their engagement, enthusiasm, and the new friendships formed.
The report below was written by one of the students that attended.
My Day at the VHAP Masterclass – A Student’s Perspective
Yesterday, we headed over to Brentwood Secondary College for the VHAP masterclass. When we got there, Mrs Patti and the friendly Brentwood staff greeted us and showed us where we'd be spending the day. Once students from other schools arrived, we jumped straight into game theory with some strategic games.
We didn’t just play—we also chatted about the smartest ways to win and even created our own games from scratch.
After recess, things got exciting: we tackled a maths-themed escape room! My team raced against the clock, and the first group finished won the cutest octopus plushies 🐙.
There were mystery-solving activities that included things like cracking secret codes and solving tricky puzzles. To finish off, we created our own mysteries, complete with hidden clues, secret keys, and clever word problems.
Huge thanks to Brentwood Secondary College for being such amazing hosts and making the day so enjoyable for all of us.
