Celebrations of Learning and Community

Book Week 2025- 'Book an Adventure'
Last week, we celebrated Book Week across the College. Book Week provides an opportunity to engage in a love of literacy and share and discuss all of the wonderful books we find joy in as a school community. To mark the occasion, our Secondary Years students engaged in a series of activities, including: Bookmark making workshops, Scavenger Hunts, mindfulness colouring of popular book covers and a variety of word games.
Senior Secondary students visited the Primary School to do buddy reading, which was very much enjoyed and well-received. We ran two competitions: a design a book cover competition and a creative writing competition. With an overwhelming amount of entries, winners will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for the next Week 8 newsletter. Our wonderful English teachers also hosted a staff morning tea to celebrate. Thanks to Mrs. Hale, Ms. Runnalls, Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Kemp for putting on a delicious morning tea.
VET Hospitality 'HG' Cafe
It was another exciting Wednesday night for our talented Unit 1 & 2 VET Hospitality and Cookery students at Hazel Glen College. After the big success of the first 'HG Cafe', students served up another delicious spread for our staff.
The menu included:
- Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad
- Veal Osso Buco with Mashed Potato and Roasted Vegetables
- Mixed Berry Crumble with Vanilla Custard
Our VET students applied a range of professional cooking techniques and hospitality service practices in a real-world scenario. Students are developing skills that will put them a step ahead of the rest. Upon completion of their certificates, they will be workplace-ready and have an advantage when applying for jobs within the hospitality sector around the world.
We are lucky at Hazel Glen College to have an industry-certified commercial kitchen for students to train in and gain valuable real-life knowledge and skills.
Communication of Learning Progress - Compass
In Secondary Years, student achievement and progress will be communicated through:
● Learning Tasks on Compass
● Semester Reports in Terms 2 and 4 are accessible on Compass
● Parent/Teacher Interviews in Terms 1 and 3
LEARNING TASKS IN THE SECONDARY YEARS
Year 7 to Year 10 Students will have their achievements in all units of work they complete communicated through learning tasks on Compass. Results will be visible to students, parents and guardians within two weeks of the completion of a unit. This will include results for: their overall achievement in the unit of work, the key assessment task, and their approaches to learning.
Effective from Term 4, Year 7-10 teachers will begin to include a detailed assessment rubric as part of some of the learning task results, which will inform the overall achievement in the unit of work.
Year 11 to Year 12 Students in VCE, VCE Vocational Major and VPC will have their achievements for all School Assessed Coursework (SACs) and School Assessed Tasks (SATs) communicated through Compass learning tasks.
HGC Careers Expo 2026
Our recent Careers Expo at Hazel Glen College was a fantastic opportunity for students to explore a wide range of career paths and gain valuable insights into their future options. The event featured representatives from La Trobe University, Melbourne Polytechnic, Carlton College, The Defence Force, MEGT, Victoria Police, La Trobe College, Headstart and the NMVC VET Cluster. Many students and parents/guardians took advantage of the chance to ask questions, gather resources, and consider potential apprenticeships, university courses, and vocational training programs.
Overall, the Careers Expo provided an inspiring environment that encouraged students to start planning their career journeys with confidence and enthusiasm. The Expo linked in with our Year 10 Course Counselling Day and the commencement of our current Year 12s moving towards their transition from Secondary School into their next pathway.

Year 10 Formal
The 2025 Year 10 Formal was held on Friday, 22nd August at the Manor on High in Epping. It was a fantastic night of celebration for our Year 10 staff and students. All students looked fantastic in their formal wear, dancing the night away with their peers. This was a great opportunity for our staff and students to celebrate such a successful year so far and to build essential connections. All attendees took full advantage of the photo booth, DJ and 3-course meal provided. Definitely a highlight of 2025. A massive thank you to the Year 10 staff and Formal Committee for putting on such an excellent event.
Year 11 Chemistry
Year 11 Chemistry class performing their first titration. The students determined the concentration of Hydrochloric acid in a common brick cleaner by titrating it with sodium carbonate. To determine accurate results, the titration was performed multiple times until concordant results were reached.
