English & Literacy

As Semester Two is coming to an end, it is the perfect time for students to enjoy some much-needed. The English Faculty hope our students are able to stay warm these Winter holidays, hopefully with a book in-hand! If students would like to borrow a novel, they should approach their Literacy or English teacher to access the library in C Block. Alternatively, students are highly encouraged to visit Melton Libraries to loan a book to read these holidays.
Year 7
Year 7s have delved into the art of rhetoric this term, where they are working towards creating a persuasive review in the form of a speech. They will be promoting their favourite novel, film, suburb, restaurant or video game to their class. We have already seen some great work from our students, and we are very excited to listen to all their wonderful speeches in Week 11!
Year 7s will be completing a close study of Julianne Negri’s, ‘The Secret Library of Hummingbird House.’ Students have been supported with time within their literacy classes to read the novel in preparation for their Term 3 English studies. If students have not yet finished reading the novel, it would be greatly appreciated if parents and guardians could provide some protected time for their child these holidays to complete the novel, supporting their child’s success in Term 3 English.
The author of the novel, Julianne, will be visiting the College on Wednesday 27 August. Thank you very much to the parents and guardians who have already processed payment for this incursion via Compass. The deadline for this payment is Friday 22 August.
Year 8
Year 8s have been studying gothic literature, using The Addams Family to guide their exploration of this mysterious and quirky genre. Students will be finishing the term with creating their own gothic narrative, utilising gothic settings, characters and symbols to construct atmosphere throughout their writing. We are certainly excited to read what our students are able to come up with!
Year 8s will also be completing their close study of The Giver in Term 3. They must complete reading the novel prior to the beginning of Term 3.
