Year 7 & 8 School Wide Positive Behaviour

Introducing School Wide Positive Behaviour
At Yarrabing Secondary College, our mission is to provide a safe, supportive environment that fosters motivation and self-discipline. Guided by our core values of respect, responsibility, high expectations, and collaboration, we are continually working to strengthen student outcomes and the overall culture of our school. As part of this ongoing commitment, we are excited to announce the introduction of School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) across our school community.
What is SWPBS?
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support is a whole-school approach to behaviour management that focuses on proactively teaching and reinforcing expected behaviours in all areas of school life. SWPBS promotes a positive, consistent environment where students clearly understand what is expected of them and are regularly acknowledged for doing the right thing.
It focuses on regularly showing students what good behaviour looks like and encouraging them to follow it, helping all students understand what it means to be successful both in and out of the classroom.
Key features of SWPBS include:
Clear behaviour expectations that are taught to all students and regularly reinforced
A focus on noticing and celebrating positive behaviour
Using data to help us understand and support student needs
Responding to behaviour in fair and consistent ways, whether it’s positive or challenging
This approach is backed by lots of research and has worked well in many schools across Victoria and around the world. It has been shown to reduce behavioural incidents, improve student engagement, and create calmer, more inclusive school environments.
How will SWPBS benefit students at Yarrabing?
By introducing SWPBS at Yarrabing, we are creating a learning environment where students feel safe, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Through consistent expectations and positive reinforcement, students are more likely to:
Develop strong relationships with peers and staff
Engage more deeply in their learning
Feel a greater sense of belonging and pride in their school
Understand and demonstrate our school values in all settings
Seeking Your Voice
As we begin introducing SWPBS, we want to make sure it reflects what’s important to our whole school community. In the coming term, the SWPBS Team will be reaching out to parents and carers to gather feedback that will guide our next steps. This may involve short surveys, focus groups, or informal conversations, and we hope you will consider sharing your voice.
SWPBS is a long-term project, and we’ll be introducing it gradually. You might start to notice some changes in language or communication as we bring in different parts of the approach, and we’ll keep sharing updates and celebrating progress with our school community along the way.
