Grade 2
Students worked with Amelia from the City of Greater Bendigo on Waste Management. She talked about our kerbside bin collection system and where they end up. We learnt lots of new things, such as:
Glass should be dropped off to the purple bins because it breaks and gets stuck in other recyclable materials and then they cannot be recycled.
Long life milk cannot go into the recycling bin because it has a layer of aluminium and wax – it needs to go into the red bin.
No e-waste and batteries can go into the bins – it's dangerous and can cause a fire
Lewis – “electronics can catch on fire in the truck”
Cody – “coffee cups should be going in the general waste”
Ivy – “the red bin goes into a big hole in the ground called landfill”
Bonnie – “soft plastics cannot go in the yellow recycling bin”
The big message was that with some extra sorting and a trip to the Strathfieldsaye Recycling Centre we can reduce our red bin by almost half! Ask your Grade 2 child for some more tips and tricks!
A big thank you to our wonderful Grade One parent helpers who have assisted with our garden activities over the past two weeks. The children have absolutely loved working alongside the extra adults, and with so many helping hands, we were able to complete lots of useful jobs around our garden and school grounds.
We enjoyed planting seedlings, making signs for our garden beds, picking up rubbish and manure in our paddocks, and creating insect homes to encourage more little creatures into our garden.
We would love our families to enjoy this special space too! Please feel free to take a walk down to the garden with your child and let them show you some of the wonderful work they have been doing.
Foundation students have continued their work on plant features and learnt about scientific drawings. We draw what we can see, use labels and add a heading. It’s very different to creative drawing! We’ve also been in the garden planting some seeds and doing some watering. This week we observed the sheep in the paddock and consolidated our scientific drawing skills.
Donations
We would love donations of seedlings, cuttings or plants, including vegetables, fruit, herbs, succulents and flowers. Our goal is to grow a wider variety of fruit and vegetables for the children to care for and harvest, while also creating a beautiful, thriving garden that attracts and supports our bees, birds and insects.
We are also looking for bales of hay or straw that we can use in our chicken coop and throughout the garden. If any families have access to some and would be happy to donate, we would really appreciate it. Please email: acurnow@sfstrathfieldsaye.catholic.edu.au
Horse manure – we are looking for some manure to top up the worm farm. If you’re able to help out with this, please email: jwiddicombe@sfstrathfieldsaye.catholic.edu.au
Useful box
We'd like to build a useful box to be used in Term 4 for a recycled art project so would love donations of anything SMALL that may be potentially going into to landfill that we could reuse.
Think –
small plastic toys (broken or just unloved), Toy wheels, Lego pieces, Maccas toys!
Puzzle pieces, dominoes, dice
Beads
Old CDs/DVDs
Canvas artworks (they don’t need to be blank)
Wreaths
Photo frames – glass removed please.

School Holiday Garden Helpers Needed
We are hoping some families might be able to lend a hand over the upcoming school holidays to help keep our garden healthy and watered and our chickens happy and cared for. Even one visit over the holidays would be a wonderful help! We will create a simple timetable so the jobs can be shared between families, and no one has to take on too much.
If your family would be happy to help, please reach out to Amy or Jess, and we will organise a roster for the holiday period.
