Year 4 English

Year 4 students have had an engaging term in English, centred around the novel The Wild Robot. Its themes of belonging, adaptation and what it means to be ‘alive’ have sparked rich class discussions and along with opportunities to connect the text's concepts to their own lives and experiences.

Building on this, students have begun a weekly close reading routine, where they slow down and analyse short passages from the text. This is helping them dig deeper into comprehension, as well as think about authorship choices - why the author selected certain words, structures or techniques to create meaning and effect.

Alongside the novel, students have been researching non-fiction texts on robotics, exploring how real-world robots are designed and used, and comparing this to the fictional world of the novel. This has been a great way to strengthen research skills while linking back to their reading.

In writing, students have moved into persuasive text, learning the structure and language features of a formal persuasive letter. They're working on stating a clear position, backing it up with reasons and evidence, and using persuasive devices to strengthen their argument.

It's been a rewarding term of reading, thinking and writing in Year 4 English.
