Assistant Principal's Report
What a fabulous two weeks of learning and opportunities at Burwood East Primary. Here a just a few highlights:
Book Week – Symphony of Stories
Last week, our school celebrated Book Week with a fun-filled week of reading, creativity and imagination. On Monday, students and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters, with colourful and creative costumes.
A special highlight was our author visit on Tuesday afternoon for students in Years 3-6. Our students had the opportunity to meet Andy Griffiths, who is known for his humorous and imaginative stories, including the Treehouse series and his new series, You & Me. He shared his writing journey, elements of his stories and how he worked alongside his illustrator friend, Terry Denton. The visit encouraged students to develop a love of reading and writing. A big shout of to Steph for organising this incredible experience.
We were also fortunate to have a National Gallery of Victoria online book week incursion for selected (VHAP) Year 5 and 6 students. Students explored the fundamentals of storytelling, from sparking creative ideas, crafting unique characters, writing captivating opening lines and building engaging plots with author Jacqueline Harvey. Thank you to Aiesha and Daniel for organising this opportunity for our students.
Fire Fighters Visit
Our Foundation students enjoyed a special visit from local firefighters, who taught them important fire safety skills in a fun and engaging way. Students learned what to do in an emergency and to call 000. They also had the exciting opportunity to see a fire engine and learn about the equipment firefighters use. A real highlight for the students was squirting the hose. The visit helped build students’ understanding of how to stay safe.
Kindergarten Visit
We were fortunate to recently host 20 kindergarten students from Insight Early Learning – Emu Burwood Group. Our kinder friends explored the library, shared a story or two with Kat, played on the Foundation Playground and visited our Foundation classrooms. It was a fantastic session, our kinder friends were very confident, amazing at following instructions and lots of fun. This opportunity allows us to build strong connections with our local community. Thank you to our Year 6 students and Darren for performing the school song, making our guests feel very welcomed.
Father’s Day Stall
This Thursday and Friday our students visited the Father’s Day Stall to make a small purchase for their dad, grandpa or a special person in their life. The students had a range of gifts to choose from, with a special thanks to Edwina and the Parents Association for their time and dedication in organising this event. We wish everyone a great Sunday!
SunSmart
In line with our SunSmart policy at Burwood East Primary School, all students are required to bring a hat to school from September until the end of April to be worn whenever outdoors including recess and lunchtime.
Hats:
Children must wear hats that shade the face, neck and ears. Hats must be named and should not be shared. Please note that students without a hat will be directed to the COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) for the duration of recess & lunch play times.
Sunscreen:
Our SunSmart policy also recommends that students wear SPF 50+ sunscreen when the UV Index is 3 or above. Students are encouraged to bring their own (named) sunscreen and will be reminded to apply this prior to going outside for play times.
Drop off and Pick Up Safety
This is a reminder that we all have a responsibility to keep everyone safe when dropping off and picking up children from school. We ask that you are considerate of other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians within the school community and the wider community by using the assigned areas during these times.
