A Therapy Dog
Here at St John Vianney's we are looking at implementing a therapy / wellbeing dog program.
Introducing Lenny. He is a nearly 3 year old corgi/ poodle dog who just loves being around people. He is a quiet boy who loves to have a cuddle and have his tummy patted. He is currently undergoing training to be a wellbeing dog and will be certified with the State Government upon completion.
What is a School Therapy or Wellbeing dog?
A school therapy or wellbeing dog is one who attends school with the aim of making school a better place for all involved. They are present for a limited number of days per week and are able to interact wih students and staff in a variety of ways. All interactions of both students and staff with the dog is voluntary - the dog will never be forced upon an individual.
What are the benefits of a school dog?
There is a growing research body that demonstrates that therapy dogs can support in man exciting ways
- Confidence building
- Stress reduction
- Anxiety management Social and emotional learning and self-regulation
- Literacy development
- Increased motivation
What activities might a therapy dog be involved in?
- having a child read to them
- walk a nervous child into class
- be involved in break out times to manage anxiety
- be quiet company when a child is feeling unwell
- simply be there as a calming influence
What if my child is uneasy around dogs?
There are many personal and cultural reasons why some families may not wish to be around dogs. This is understood by the schoool. Lenny is trained to meet chidren where they are at. There s no pressure to be in contact with Lenny, with the choice to interact being the child's choice. Lenny will at all times be under the supervision of a staff member.
Should you have any questions please contact myself, Jenny or Andrew.
Lenny will not be at school untill later this term to allow him to complete his training and allow students to become comfortable with the concept.
Looking forward to sharing this exciting adventure with everyone,
