Students across Prep to Year 6 have been diving into rich and engaging topics in Indonesian this fortnight. Prep students explored rice fields and discovered how important rice is in everyday life and culture in Indonesia. In Years 1 and 2, students began learning about family members and enjoyed reading a story about Beni the orangutan and his family. Years 3 and 4 have been exploring traditional markets, learning about what can be bought and how bargaining plays a role. Meanwhile, our Year 5 and 6 students have been delving into Indonesian cuisine, discovering popular dishes from different regions and learning key vocabulary to describe food.
Sampai jumpa! (See you next time!)
Over the past fortnight in Performing Arts, students have been exploring the song "We Are Australian", and what it means to belong to a diverse and vibrant nation. Students have concentrated on the song’s themes and engaged in rich discussions about Australian identity. The song’s chorus is sung at every Yarra Road assembly and is a special song for our school community.
Prep
Our youngest learners have been introduced to the chorus of "We Are Australian," using simple actions and movement to connect with the idea of belonging to a wider community.
Years 1 and 2
Students in Years 1 and 2 have explored how music can reflect cultural diversity and unity. Through singing and discussion, they have connected the song’s lyrics to ideas of inclusivity and pride.
Years 3 and 4
In Years 3 and 4, students have examined how pitch and rhythm create melody, while also using movement and small group performances to express the key messages of the song.
Years 5 and 6
Our senior students have been creating pieces, using voice and visual storytelling, to celebrate Australia's shared stories and diverse cultures.
Choir
Meanwhile, choir members have been rehearsing "We Are Australian" during Monday recess practices, working towards a beautiful and confident performance that captures the spirit of the song.
It’s been a thoughtful fortnight, with students reflecting on what it means to be Australian through both words and music.
Prep
Last week in PE, the Preps focussed on their hand/eye/foot coordination skills through a variety of jumping activities, progressing into using a skipping rope - some for the first time.
Almost all students were able to swing the rope and jump over it once, which was a huge achievement! Their biggest achievement though was their determination and perseverance. Well done Preps!
This week we will be focusing on Athletics events and technique.
Years 1 and 2
The Year 1 and 2 students have been preparing for the House Athletics Sports that are fast approaching. This week we focussed on sprinting and hurdling. We worked on our starting technique, footwork, knee lift, and arm drive to help us when running fast, and then practised leaping over the hurdles. Finally, we put our sprinting skills into action with some super fast relays.
Years 3 and 4
In PE last week, the 3/4s started the lesson working with skipping ropes, which is one of the focuses this term for fitness and heart health. While most achieved success with basic skipping, others were able begin attempting some tricks, which was great to see.
This week we will be focussing on events, which will be included in the upcoming Athletics day, and applying correct techniques.
Years 5 and 6
Athletics Day is fast approaching! This week’s lesson focussed on improving our sprinting and hurdling techniques. Students worked on their agility through ladderwork, aiming to get up on their toes, work on their knee lift, and how to use their arm to achieve maximum drive. Students also practised going over the hurdles. They were encouraged to coach each other and provide feedback on each others' techniques. Next week we will work on jumps and throws.
Welcome back to a brand new term! We hope you all had a relaxing and refreshing holiday break. It’s been wonderful to see the students return with such energy and enthusiasm, what an amazing start to the term we’ve had already!
We’d also like to take a moment to celebrate two incredible young artists who have been hard at work over the holidays. A huge congratulations to Madeline M (3/4C) and Bardia D (3/4B) for their stunning artistic creations. Their dedication, creativity, and passion for the arts truly shine through in their work, and we are so proud to showcase their efforts.
Well done Maddie and Bardia, and thank you to all our students for such a fantastic start to the term!
