Around Our Level
Welcome back to Term 2. Whilst last week was a short week, the children have settled back into our school routines quickly and confidently. We would also like to welcome Mr Sam Walsh from Deakin University to Prep A. Sam is completing his 4th year placement with Mrs Cooper, and we hope that he enjoys his time at Yarra Road Primary School developing his teaching skills.
Last week we also commemorated ANZAC Day over the broadcast service to our students. A huge thank you to our School Captains Zoe and Aisha for doing such a great job. We showed respect with a minute’s silence, and in Prep we read picture story books about ANZAC Day and coloured in a wreath with the words ‘Lest We Forget’. We talked about poppies and what they symbolise.
In Literacy, we have been learning about the sound that ‘d’ makes and revising the heart words ("a", "I", "said", "the", "is", and "as"). We have been learning to write upper- and lower-case letter ‘d’.
In Maths, we have been learning about patterns. Our Preps can identify patterns with actions, like stomp/clap/stomp/clap, can make patterns with their bodies, like up/down/up/down, and can recognise both shape and colour patterns. We found patterns in our classroom, outside in the yard, and even on our clothes and school uniform. In fact, we found patterns almost everywhere!
In History, we have been learning about families and the different structures and types of families. We recognise that each family is made up differently and are all unique.
On Friday we look forward to commencing our Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) in the gym. Thank you to all those parents that have volunteered to assist, as we rely on your wonderful support to assist with activity stations. PMP supports our Prep students to develop their gross motor skills, balance, hand-eye coordination, throwing/catching skills, agility, and the teaching of important language concepts (in front, behind, through, around, under, over etc.).
The Parents Association will be organising their annual ‘Mother’s Day’ stall on Friday the 9th of May. Children can bring up to $10 to spend at the stall as items are reasonably priced. Don’t forget to bring a bag for all your purchases. We will also be undertaking some ‘Mother’s Day’ craft activities in our classroom.
Upcoming events include our House Athletic Sports and The Teddy Bears Picnic with our Year 5 Buddies.
Students are nominated by their teachers to receive a certificate of acknowledgment. The below students' certificates will be presented at our next assembly.
