National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week

There are two upcoming events that Good Shepherd will acknowledge  — National Sorry Day (26th May) and National Reconciliation Week (27th May – 3rd June) — as we learn more about Australia’s history and work together toward understanding, healing, and respect.

What is National Sorry Day?

National Sorry Day is a time for all Australians to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, especially the Stolen Generations—children who were forcibly removed from their families under past government policies. It’s a day to say "Sorry" and to commit to making sure such actions never happen again.

What is Reconciliation Week?

Reconciliation Week is a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. It’s also a chance to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year’s theme “Bridging Now to Next” reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future, encouraging all Australians to reflect on the past, learn from it, and work together towards a more united and respectful nation.

How Are We Involving Our Students?

During the events, our students will engage in age appropriate activities, which may include:

  • Reading and discussing stories about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture
  • Participating in class activities that promote respect, empathy, and inclusion
  • Creating art or messages of support and understanding
  • Reflecting on what “Sorry” and “Reconciliation” mean in simple, relatable ways
